On my Great Grandmother's death cert it lists the cause of death as "Septicemia and hemorrhage secondary to incomplete abortion (less than 3 months)" So does that me an induced abortion or could it also mean a miscarriage?

I am not an expert, but with some research and asking other genealogists, the information I've gathered leads me to believe this was a miscarriage where some tissues remained and became infected. Even today, the term abortion is used to refer to miscarriage, such as missed abortion, each with unique definitions of a naturally occurring pregnancy loss.

Rumor was that she had a back alley abortion. But there are lots of rumors in my family tree that have proven to be false.

Poor thing. If that's the case, I can't imagine how awful that must have been.
