I can not find this term in modern day medical dictionaries or references. I can only find this word used in documents and publications from the early part of the last century. Dos anyone know what it means?

No, its not influenza. It's some kinf of complication or condition. I've seen it spelled both ways, La Guppe and Laguppe. In references, it's described sometimes as an "attack of La Guppe." This was the cause of death on my great aunts death certificate. No idea what it means.

If you attach a copy of the death certificate perhaps someone will be able to figure it out.

I found laguppe as a cause of death for Mrs Fina Merritt in Ellis Co. Texas.
Her infant child died on 27 Jan 1908 from minnigitus at age 1 month. She died on the same day
at age 22. Cause of death was listed as "Laguppe following child Birth" I would assume it would
be Post Partum Depression. But I am also assuming it might have been a polite way of stating cause of death to protect the family or to receive death benefits.

No, I don't think it would be Post Partum Depression. My ancestor was much too old. I have been told that it was hypertension or a blood- related disorder, which makes sense, as all of her siblings died from stroke or aneurysm at roughly the same age. I sure hope I have not inherited the genes from this branch.

I wonder if your ancestor might have suffered from preeclamsia? That would make sense, since she was pregnant and preeclampsia is high blood pressure.

Every old time medical reference source has only Lagrippe or La Grippe for Flu or Influenza. The handwriting on the certificate must be lousy and VERY possible for a ri to look like a u. I have seen it all the time on all sorts of handwritten records, especially censuses.
Occam's Razor applies here......

There is no mistaking what the typed words spell. But thanks anyway.

The typed document may have been prepared from a doctor's or coroner's handwritten submittal. The typist may have then misread it.

It is what they call today as "Spanish Flu." Back then they said someone had "the gripe." There was a pandemic in the year of 1918, google it.
