I spend a great deal of time and energy changing location information in Ancestry because no one pays attention to Historical dates in North America. Until July 4, 1776, there was no government in NA but Colonies established by the British Empire. Between 1776 and 1789, there were independent colonies at war with Great Britain. After 25 September, 1789 there was a United States of America. Between 1860 and 1870s, there existed two separate countries at war with each other - the USA and the CSA. Why can't we adopt a uniform standard for referencing locations in North America based on well-known dates?

I do wish Ancestry would remove USA or United States of America or something similar especially when a census record is saved. And they leave off the words county in a census record. I always delete USA or that type of designation and instead add the words county but it is aggravating to have to do that..

My great grandmother was born in Texas when Texas was a Republic so I usually change the designation to Republic of Texas. The same problem exists with colonies. My ggg grandfather was born in Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts in 1773 and I always have a question about just how to record that as well.
