I do not have much experience searching small sources in other locations. I assume that if it shows "original" (in this case, newspaper) the actual paper would be available.
But how available? Also some are marked "microfilm master copy", and "microfilm service copy". Is there anyway to see one of these, or have something mailed to me, or am I pretty much going to have to go to the location and view on the premises?

Before the internet I did a lot of crawling through county courthouse records, but with the online databases, I guess I'm spoiled. And this hobby is expensive enough with out making trips in the hope that the one clue will be there.

You didn't indicate any specific record or where you found it, but your best bet for obtaining a copy of a newspaper article is through a library or genealogy society in the area of interest. Most of these copies will probably be made from microfilm. Though some libraries may still have original newspapers, it is difficult to make photocopies of them.

Microfilm service copy is microfilm that is actually used by patrons. These often get damaged, scratches, etc. The microfilm master copy is used to make new service copies, so it never gets used by patrons. Barring some machine malfunction, the master copy and service copy should be exactly the same.
