I posted this on the Ancestry Site Comments board - but maybe I should have posted it here:

This database (or at least the portion I was searching) has a serious indexing problem. None of the search hits for my great uncle Henry McConkey associate with the correct image. I eventually found his information (20 pages worth) by hit and miss paging through the database - I finally realized that it is in descending candidate number order. Henry is in the group 035399-035300. I didn't check if the other groups have the same problem!
Thanks John. I'll give that a shot. Tried the "Report Issue" tact twice to no avail. I've found a workaround, and this is just an annoyance now, but would lke a long term fix.

Thanks again

Martin, there's 2 steps to fixing this depending on what your need is. If you just want to update your tree with this record create the male person manually (if he's not there already) and then save the record to that person. If you really want Ancestry to fix their error then "Report Issue" might work but I have had success with "Add Alternate Information". You won't find an option "gender" but just choose "name", leave the name the same and click on "Explain or source your update(optional)" and in the box provided explain what needs to be changed. When Ancestry picks this up they will make the modification and label it "User submitted change". I believe these changes are recognized by their search engine.

Hello Matt,
We were all newbies once and I still know less than lots of people who do this! But here`s my view of things...

You can order actual certificates from the General Register Office for £9.25 each.
www.gro.gov.uk

You might get lucky with some parish records which include actual images. But as a general rule the official Government website is the usual route. And cheaper than ordering through Ancestry.

The latest Census is 1911 because of The Freedom of Information act, which was passed in 2000.
This restricts censuses being released for 100 years.
There is a fuller explanation here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Census_in_the_United_Kingdom

Hope this helps,
Jacki

I'm new to this site so forgive the newbie questions.

I was expecting to see actual birth/death/mariage certificates not just index pages. How do view the actual certificates that hold more information then just the index'es

Also is there a reason the latest Census on here is from 1911.

I am trying to be helpful, but it's difficult without all of the information.

If you've found a person on Ancestry's 1911 census index and transcript listed as the wrong gender, then you need to report that to Ancestry by going to the census entry, then under Page Tools on the right of the screen, clicking on Report Issue.

If I've misunderstood the problem, please let me know.

Arghhh. Not sure why this is a problem.

I can post screenshots if you like, but I'd like to go back to my original post.

There is a male ancestor in the 1911 UK census that is clearly listed as male head of household. Yet, on the index (table listed below and what is in Ancestry.com data), this person is listed as female.

I want that corrected.

Happy to do that myself given instructions, but not sure I have this capability. Would like to know specifically how to correct this obvious issue.

Please give me a useful pointer on where to go next.

How does one correct errors that are not editable? I would have thought that there was an alias for this, or a form, or something. Please be helpful.

Thanks

Um, I do know what "incorporate" means, but thanks anyway.

What is needed is to know to what you're trying to add this information. For instance, if you are trying to add this automatically to your Ancestry online tree, your query needs to be placed on the Member Trees message board where members there can assist you. If you are adding the information to other software, your query should go on the appropriate genealogy software board.

I feel I must be the only person in the world with an interest in this!

I would like to sub again to ancestry rather than findmypast as ancestry has by far the better indexes for my research, but refuse to sub until the 1911 is complete to view.

Thank you,
S.B

Has anyone else noticed that the birth places of many people born in the Lancashire towns of Bacup, Bury and Ince [in Makerfield] are missing from Ancestry's 1911 transcription database? I've been adding them for the people I've been researching, but based on my sample, there must be thousands missing. Is there a bug in the database, or didn't transcribers think they were real places? Are any other towns missing?

Your decision will, to a large extent, depend on when and where you are searching. Ancestry has a wealth of parish registers for a few areas of the country (London, Liverpool,Dorset, Warwickshire, and West Yorkshire)but very little coverage of parish registers (which are the building blocks of research prior to 1837) for other counties.

When are where are you looking?

Local registrars office are very strapped for cash these days and many do their level best to avoid having to deal with genealogical requests, such as requiring that you supply quite a lot of detail in your application (which, of course, if you had you wouldn't need the certificate!). They are also now slightly more expensive (£10 for the certificate plus postage plus an admin fee for debit or credit cards compared to £9.25 all inclusive).

Hi
Don't order them through Ancestry. They are so expensive bought this way. Buy through the official UK government web site http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ and order through that. I use it a lot and have always found it very efficient. I've had a look and it gives delivery times of 7 days to countries outside Europe. Hope this helps (and saves you a lot of money!).
Regards
Julie

Ancestry has the GRO indices, which relate to England and Wales only. Scotland has its own, separate, system of civil registration (beginning later than the English one, in 1855), administered by the GROS (General Register Office of Scotland). You can view the Scottish indices at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. The good news is that Scottish law allows the supply of images of original registration information without applying for a certificate. You can get the full details of a registration instantly online via Scotland's People for about £1.

There are loads of British records on Ancestry, and to try and list them would be impossible. One of the things that you would need to do would be to familiarise yourself with looking for British ancestors. A good place to start might be on the National Archives site, and there help pages:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-perso...

In terms of reviewing the Ancestry catalogue have you tried logging off and then connecting to ancestry.co.uk as a visitor, in order to be able to see for yourself what records there are?

From a purely personal point of view I believe that there are 3 principal on line repositories of information and these are Ancestry and FindmyPast, both pay per view and then of course Family Search.
