LoL
being a newbie I for one see the quaking leaves and get excited. Just look at all the years of painstaking work that has been done, Just for me!

When on close examination I found 2 or more children born in the same year, or a parent b.1740 of a child b.1690 I know something is wrong with what I have imported. Duh, Whats with that?

Than I have 11 William, 5 Thomas, and a untold number of Sarah, Elizabeth, and Mary given names for the same surname.
tracing back to 1000 AD so far. It makes attaching documents to the correct individual tedious. Having the same given name over many generations sure has helped me to follow my line tho.

One thing that has helped me sort things out is to include the birth year in the Suffix box of the name line..
Helps me quickly identify to Whom I am attaching something to.. My old eyes easily pick out the the BOLD date following the Name in list view..

Duplicates caused me some problems when I first started if entered as a name or other variation. I found it hard to find the active individual in the tree.. I wish their was a way to merge individuals into one. beginning to sound like WFT eh.

I too was bothered by ancestors prior to 1776 being listed as born/living in USA but have found it impractical to try and sort out Virginia colony, Carolina colony etc. tho I do try to list the parish and such.

Just had to comment on your frustration as the cleanup of my own line has frustrated me..
The only partial solution I've found is to click on the "save" button and you get the whole page. BUT that can be iffy for me too depending on what size image ends up being there since you can't resize it - too small and my old eyes have a hard time reading it.

Dianne

Thomasker2 said:
"All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.
. . .
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country"

--There are exceptions. Some of the Maine enumerations for 1810 stated County of birth of the head of household.

"NO occupation was stated"

--There are exceptions. The 1810 enumeration for Jefferson Co., (West) Virginia gave occupations, for example.

"NO race was stated [but assume “white”]"

--This is just incorrect. The 1790 through 1840 enumerations have some 'racial' designations such as 'black', 'free black', non-taxed Indians. Each enumeration varies as to category and whether age-ranges are given. The enumerations that count "slaves" should not be assumed to be listing just what the enumerator might perceive as African-Americans. And the enumerators' perceptions may or may not be the same as what a person today might say. Since there actually is no such thing as "race," and a variety of intermingling of various geographic ancestries' blood took place, physical appearance was and is not a very good guide to what those ancestries might be.

I believe the family data collection is made up of information extracted from user trees. Using it as a source is basically copying from a tree but in a different format.

I used to marvel at the crazy dates and mistakes, but now I just ignore the family data collection altogether.

I completely agree. As a professional genealogist I have cleaned up so many trees because people see the quaking leaves and get excited or they link up with others that are (or seem to be) relatives and they almost always become a jumbled mess. I am all for people getting the genealogy bug and wanting to know more. I am also all for people doing the work themselves, but you cannot cut corners with family research. You can't look at a tree and accept it as truth. You have to get the records yourself. It is not a quick and easy process. It takes time and energy, and a family tree is NEVER done.

Facts that should known about the early census records -
All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.
NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces +++
i have noticed that many people do not read the family data collections they just save them to there tree, many people who have the same family members that i have, save records that say people are born in massachusetts in the 1580's that is not true, englishmen did not come to massachusetts until 1620. and another point when you fill in the data on people in your tree, you can not be born in the united states before 1776. You would be born in New England or other colonies not the United States

yearbooks assume birth date

I was browsing ancestry.com (through FTM) for my grandfater, just looking for others who looked at his records or yearbooks etc. I found a few year books from the U. of IL, when he was a professor, but the index listed him as 16 years old. I could comment on his name but not his age. It's like every yearbook is assumed to be a high school yearbook. If you read the image, he worked at teh school, and I know he was born decades earlier. How can we fix that index?

Similarly, when I see an index for directories or news clippings, they are often indexing a person not mentioned anywhere on the page. How can we edit this index? i can add a comment, but someone would have to drill to the image to read it.
Here is an example:
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&dbid=1540&...

RE: The Templeton & Allied Families" by Yolande Templeton Claque. I subscribe only to ancestry.ca and rely on libraryancestry.com for additional material. After discovering that the TEMPLETON book was available on ancestry.com, I checked the library version, only to discover that this title isn't listed. And, my search of "Stories, Memories & Histories" was redirected to "Family & Local Records." Is this typical? Perhaps I've just been naïve about ancestry.

Thank you for your reply. When the "new" Family & Local Histories was launched it appeared that new items had ceased (but for city directories and updates to previously existing items). That was unacceptable. I did an analysis of all items launched in August and found this to be the case.

However, to Ancestry.com's credit, it appears that categorizatons have been reevaluated. As you have just noted, two recent additions of marriage indexes were added. I was really glad to see that because marriage indexes should fall under the U.S. Records category.

You also replied to one of my post on another message. Thank you for your interest and concern about subscribers.

Rule One: When you do actually locate Meyers Orts on Ancestry, bookmark it!

Try this: In Ancestry, go to Search, scroll down to Europe, then Germany, then look for the category "Maps, Atlases & Gazetteers".
Now scroll down [about 6 lines] to "Meyers Gazetteer of the German Empire." I don't know why using any of those terms as keywords doesn't result in finding Meyers!

Best of luck, BG

I have figured out how to access the Meyers Orts und Verkehrs Lexicon Gazetteer [online via Ancestry], which is used to locate & expand information on place names in 1912 Germany. Ancestry's version is quite clear, although it is in German script. Good practice for me, a beginning student of German.

After I find a location, and print out a copy, I can interpret the abbreviations fairly well with the help of Wendy Uncapher's and Larry Jensen's books. But they advise genealogists to also check Meyers' 3rd Volume for the same location. They say added information may exist in Vol. III for any location, possibly with some corrections.

Can anybody explain to me how, or even if, I can access Volume III, via Ancestry? If there is an explanation on the Ancestry site, I have not been able to find it.

Thanks for any suggestions, BG

Lisa with TGN has helped again. There were three more records that I had found and thought should be included in US Records. These were "Germans in Colonial Georgia" and two "Swedish in Delaware" records. These have now been corrected thanks to Lisa. It is so great when someone at Ancestry really cares about we subscribers.

Actually I think we both had something to do with and thanks to Lisa it is done. I found another in Louisiana and pointed that one out as well. One problem I see is that when we find a book that we think should be in the US collection, there is no way to tell because we do not have access to even a description. By the way, they were right in that there was a "technical problem" but make that a "tech" problam because Lisa said it was human error. Someone clicked the wrong check mark and did not go back to see if it was in the right place.

Thank you mbmjlm as it seems you had something to do with getting this corrected.

I received two emails from Lisa about this matter. The books are now included in the US Records Collection.

Yesterday morning I went to the books and they were still in the World Records Collection.
I'm quite familiar with the baloney from Ancestry. I'll just send them this paragraph after they tell me "how to search"

"BOOK: New Homes in a New Land: German Immigration to Texas, 1847-1861 by Ethel H. Geue; Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co, 1970, reprinted 1999. A sequel to A New Land Beckoned, listed just above, this book contains the names of 5,600 German immigrants taken from 105 passenger lists. The person's age, place of residence in Europe, and dates of departure and arrival are given, along with the Texas county the immigrant settled in. This book is presently out of print, but can be found at many libraries."

They will just tell you what they told me-which is a lot of baloney. They said if the records were gathered from German sources they belong in World Records. Of course, there is no way for anyone to tell where the sources come from. As far as I am concerned they are telling a big fat story here. They tried to pull this last year. It's all about trying to push all subscribers into the more expensive records. Ultimately, I think it will turn around and bite them for pulling these kinds of stunts.

Databases in wrong collection

On 9/13 I sent an email to Ancestry support, pointing out that two databases released on that day were incorrectly added to the Family & Local Histories Collection when they should have been added to the U.S. Records Collection.

(Abstracts of Ripley County, Indiana wills, December 1931 to November 1944) and (Ross County, Ohio marriage records)

The U.S. Records Collection clearly states that it includes:
• U.S. Federal Census Indexes
• Social Security Death Index
• Birth, Marriage and Death Records ***
• Military Records
• Slave Narratives
• Court, land and probate records ***
• Regional histories
• City directories

As of today, these databases are still incorrectly cataloged. When will these databases be corrected?

We apologize for any confusion on this subject. It would appear that
these databases would be better suited US Records, you are correct. And
we will certainly pass this on as a suggestion for improvement to our
programming department. The response that has come to us from the
Marketing Department when we have inquired about these matters is that
any material which has been published by professional genealogists will
be added to Family and Local Histories.

If there is anything else we can assist you with, please let us know.

Jason
Customer Solutions
Ancestry.com

Re: What exactly is Family and Local Histories?

The FLH collection is the best place online to find out if any previous research has been done for your ancestor and/or ancestor's surname. Also, it is the best place to find locality information (history of places, town, counties, states, institutions, etc.)

It is currently in different formats. Most are OCR'd browseable images with searchable text. Some are just text (no images), and some are images with hit-highlighting.

When you find an ancestor in a family history, you might also find stories about them and their family.

To me, family histories are the 'crown jewel' of family history research. They are the end product we are all trying to make as we research for our ancestors.

Hope this helps, good luck in your research.

N. Hibbert
Assoc. Product Manager
FLH and US Records Collection.

Re: A.com FLH vs G.com FLH

Linda,

I have good news and bad news. Good news: your two titles will be available at Ancestry.com soon. Bad news: because they are not family or local histories, they have been added to the US Records subscription.

You may have seen some other posts on this board mentioning titles in the FLH collection that should be in the US Records collection. We filtered through the 20,000+ titles the best we could and moved titles into their appropriate catagories. Some still made it into the FLH collection (hence, the posts on this board). Some we put into other collections were they really do belong (hence, your two titles).

The "Abstract of Book.." and "Marriage Records" is about to be launched in the US Records collection this month. If you would like, I can notify you when they go live.

Good luck in your research! Please let me know any other questions you may have.

N. Hibbert
Assoc. Product Manager
FLH and US Records Collection

Chris,

Thank you for the list. We will make sure they are accessible in the appropriate collections. The process for doing this on-the-fly is being developed.

N. Hibbert
Assoc. Product Manager
Family and Local Histories

Laura,

I am aware of the searching problem. It is being fixed as we speak (er, type). As soon as the fix is rolled live, I will notify everyone on this message board.

Thanks,

N.
Matthew,

Thank you for the information regarding this database. I have forwarded this information on to our development team to find out where the other images are.

I will contact you directly with the information I find.

Regards,

N.
Re: Viewer

This particular "viewer" is frustrating to me as well. It seems strange to me that even in the same database (Family & Local Histories), I can encounter a different viewer when accessing a selection from the collection.

when the latest viewer was given/downloaded, it seemed to eliminate the access to Ancestry's "advanced viewer" implemented with the census images.

What in the world is going on, Ancestry?
