I have had that happen in the past, but not recently.

Trying changing one of your filters, click apply, let it re-populate, and then change it back.

My goodness. He just called me a witch. Well, since I suspect some of my Mayflower Ancestors were in Salem, Mass-maybe he is right. And before you say it-yes I can prove my ancestors came over on the Mayflower. As for Chris, this is just another in a very long line of rants he posts about me. Would that he had better things to do than to go off on this little old lady. And this is my last word on the subject. Time to call a halt to this one boys.

I just tested with Chrome and had no problems.

I mostly use Firefox and rarely have a problem. There were some issues late last night/early this morning (US East Coast), but those appear to have been website issues, not browser issues.

You miss the point entirely, MB. There are at least a dozen reasons why YOUR internet might temporarily slow down (reasons which have been explained to you many times over the years), that have nothing to do with Ancestry.

But every time it happens, you rush to the message boards with accusations that Ancestry is making your life miserable again. You never stop to consider one of the many other reasons. Often, by the time you get done with your own private little pity party, the problem has been resolved.

There is nothing wrong with coming to the boards to ask if a problem is localized to you, or more widespread - but just leave it at that. The whining and pointing fingers just make you look like a big crybaby, and I know that you are smarter than that.

Ancestry must have changed something to make their new viewer no longer work with Chrome. I have been using Chrome for ages as my default browser and have certainly used the new viewer from time to time. Now when I click on a "View Image" link the viewer starts but in place of the record image there is a black screen. I can go to the "Image Tools" menu and select "Switch to Basic Viewer" and that will show the image. This viewer problem is not apparent with IE (which I presume most members use) or even Firefox. When are software developers going to learn that if you make a website change you should test with ALL popular browsers?

If they are still a member, that's more likely to come to their attention than a message board thread that's several years old.
"I'm getting the images alright today. The slow problem lasted about 30 minutes or so. I was surprised because it was after midnight Central Fl time on Sunday morning and the folks at Ancestry are usually not messing around with anything at that time or on the weekends. Usually on the weekends we are safe from any messing(changing things) but one never knows any more. Changing things is what usually happens on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday which is why when I have a slowdown very early in the morning on those days I am not surprised. Maybe it was just a glitch. One can always hope."

Or maybe, just maybe, it wasn't Ancestry's fault after all. But then, you don't spend much time in realityland, do you, Mary Beth?

As has already been posted, you need to find the appropriate Message Board for posting such inquiries. There are thousands of Surnames Boards on Ancestry where your message might be of assistance, and it is suggested that you choose the ones with the surnames you mentioned:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surname.aspx?sname

Yes, the new "enhanced" Image Viewer definitely is broken. If you click on "Image Tools" and "Switch to Basic Viewer" the image shows up as expected.

This may be related to what I am experiencing today. There seems to be an issue with the Image Viewer. If you click on a "view original image" link the Viewer opens and you see source credits and zoom tool but the image is totally black. Clicking on the page forward symbol increments the page number but still gives a black screen. I've tried it with census images and BMD images - all give the same effect. By the way didn't they say they were going to eliminate the choice of viewers? Maybe this is the result - no viewer at all!

Oh my, well. My computer leaves me logged in all the time, it doesn't even log me out when I'm viewing on my Kindle. So that info does not really tell anyone if I am actually looking and when.

My hover-over feature works just fine. I hope it continues to.

This issue about people not getting PM's at this site has me wondering if I should PM them a second time....after a reasonable length of time passes (two weeks) and they have not responded. It's not my nature to do that, I don't want to be a pest to people. At the same time, I do have questions that I would like them to help me with. If someone's trees are public and they say they can help other's and then they don't respond, should one assume they are not getting the message? I think that is just weird that they wouldn't be.

I was, in fact, referring to "the person's full profile."

There's a thread below called "My profile has me MIA." http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.ancestry.ancsite/12703/mb.... There is also another thread on the topic on the "Member Trees" board -- http://boards.ancestry.com/topics.ancestry.membertree.member...

I note that my profile was just corrected. Just a few days ago it said I hadn't logged on for over a year. On the Member Trees thread, some folks say theirs has been fixed already, others say no, not yet.

Once everyone's profile is repaired, along with the hover-over-ID information, then members should be informed that it is once again safe to rely on the "last logged in" info, IMO.

(And why should the hover-over pop-up info still remain unrepaired? How can new users guess that they shouldn't trust the information? How can they guess which is wrong and which right, even if they do give the "bit of thought required" and click through to the full profile?)

I mentioned this uncertainty as one more reason to give the member who hasn't replied yet the benefit of the doubt.

There are also more possibilities for why someone does not reply -- I'd like to add some to this discussion.

Perhaps (heaven forbid!) a member just had a heart attack and is currently in ICU, wondering if they're on the verge of joining their great heavenly family tree?

What if (perish the thought!) a member is from Oklahoma and thanks to a tornado their house is no longer standing, much less the computer and genealogy research, which landed in the next county?

Or even a situation like that of my close family member -- who had a cerebral aneurysm and, thankfully, survived. Her short term memory is permanently screwed up -- but she's still active on the internet! Heaven knows if she inadvertantly blows off communications with someone. She often doesn't remember having spoken to me -- right after we spoke! She's also reluctant to tell folks about the aneurysm, so to many people she appears to be quite rude.

There are hundreds more possibilities (getting hit with foreclosure, divorce papers, clinical depression, etc. etc. etc.)

Well, I guess you all get the general idea.

On the other hand, the person might just be rude. But how can we know for sure?

It also doesn't help matters that the feature which is meant to show when a member last logged in is on the fritz, making that information virtually meaningless!

Genealogy is about tracking blood lines.

I would put the sex of a person according to the sex they were as a parent.

If a father of natural children = male.
If a mother of natural children = female.

If both a natural father and mother of children.... well, that would require some thought - as would artificial insemination.

If not a natural parent while in either sex, see below.

____________

As for the PRIMARY name, I follow the practice (before the modern concept of birth certificates) of using the (formal) name most often seen to be accepted or used by, the person; which is generally the name on their headstone - not in a birth record.

However, for sex change folks, I would follow the same rules as above. Use the name associated with their status as a parent - the male or female one. If they've never been a parent, the PRIMARY name I would use would most likely be the one they changed to.

I'm not saying my practices are right and anything else is wrong - that's just what I do, or would do, in these situations.

I think that would work too, but remember that not all transgendered have sex changes, Many do not, but dress and live as the opposite sex, and take other names that reflect the gender they have chosen. In my case, the individual was a parent, but gave up the child who was legally adopted by grandparents. It can get confusing, but for our family tree, this person is listed with the name and sex of birth. Being of some note, the person is listed in Wikipedia and academic papers and articles with the name and gender that was chosen.

It can be very confusing.

I ran into just this situation. A person I was researching just completely disappeared. I searched for two years and finally found the death record listed with the transgendered name. I have the person listed with the name from birth, and then a "story" about when the individual began living as the opposite sex, and list the year range as best I know it. I honestly don't know how one would do this any differently since early records will be found under the original name, and later records will reflect the transgender event, so it seems to me this is the correct way to list the person, since your source citations will likely include different names, and sex than the original birth record.
