Why have a PRIVATE PROFILE?
I have been on and off this website for 10 years now and always seem to run into several Private Trees. I do not understand this as this website is 50% working off of other family trees. If we all were to set our profiles to private, I am sure most of our photos, stories, memories, and other information would not be accessible unless. Anyways, happy leafing!

"Anyways, happy leafing! "
Many of the trees that are private are that way because people do not believe that "leafing" is genealogy.

Re: Why have a PRIVATE PROFILE?
There are numerous reasons why people want their trees to be private. I even know of one serious researcher who does it because he's had bad experiences being contacted by other tree owners who want to argue about patent facts. Others are paranoid about rumours about ACOM (the organisation) and really don't know any better.
Personally I use ACOM because it provides useful searching and sometimes useful info from other public trees. In fact, ACOM isn't public enough for me because non-members can't see the public trees, which is why I also publish my trees on public web pages.

Re: Why have a PRIVATE PROFILE?
I have a reason for my private tree (I didn't know any better when I first began so I included rumors and gossip - with sources, but still....)
If someone writes to me, though, and asks for info on a person, I'll send it to them. I don't think of it as MY genealogy - I just wrote it down - but will share.

Hi Andrew
I have no idea what ACOM is. Could you let my know.
Cheers

Re: Why have a PRIVATE PROFILE?
They are selfish, frankly, I can see no possible other reason that wanting "credit." I upload images I scan for posterity, not credit. Anyone withholding valuable, sourced information by making the tree private is... I dunno where to start.
They should make the private setting 100% reciprocal. If your tree is private ytou should have zero access to ANY data you did not personally upload. That includes census data, unless you were one of the many people involved in actually scanning it. How many people would have private trees if doing so even just made all member information 100% invisible? None would have the many images of family, some taken in the 1800s, that I have uploaded, for example.
I want my family to have the images, but whenever some are grabbed by a "private" tree, I get pretty annoyed, as they very likely have data I might like to know about, but are unwilling to share.

Re: Why have a PRIVATE PROFILE?
I can't agree with you more damara, I just did the dna test and all of my matches have private trees. I even reached out to a few to at least give me the names of our common ancestors/surnames if they wont give me access to the tree. One lady actually told me she would let me view her tree and then a few minutes later said she looked at my tree and there was some sort of discrepancy and took away my ability to view hers and hasn't replied back since.
Honestly I don't mind keeping mine public, I put work into mine but I am new to this and I rely on others work also, but if someone has a private tree (its their info so they can do as they wish) but it should be possible to block them from seeing mine or any other public tree or pictures also, because if they are un-willing to share pictures and other info then I don't want them to have any of mine.

"they very likely have data I might like to know about, but are unwilling to share"
I doubt that very much - I suspect there is just as much dreck in private trees as in public ones. And how do you know the tree owner will not share information, if you have not asked? I have one private tree, as well as public ones, and I always try to respond to requests for information.

Re: Why have a PRIVATE PROFILE?
I don't believe for one minute that "all of [your] matches have private trees." Please don't exaggerate.
