I tried again today and the Search was totally changed. Yesterday's Search must have been a really bad "beta" - it had half a dozen little tabs across the top of the list and no way to refine a search. Today's is better but it still gets pissy if I try to restrict the search by spelling of name or date of birth. Essentially it says if you won't let me show every possible match with wildly incorrect names and dates, and all the relevant data on the second or third page - you can't see anything.

Suggestion Ancestry - take a look at search on FindMyPast UK - very elegant
