I did not authorize the payment so it did not go through. I have, the last 2 years paid a year in advance. You do not have to call anyone, be put on hold, or give your credit card number to anyone but an encrypted computer program.
Why would you have to call to pay for a six months subscription. Payments can't programed for less then a year?**smiles** They give you a link to look at what an upgrade can do, a link for an annual subscription, why not a link to a payment site?
One thing, though, is very much "self inflicted" as you charitably point out; I expected more from Ancestry.com
