I've found what records are available to be quite useful. It depends what sort of records you are interested in. For someone born then, there should be Electoral Roll information. Then there are the various directories.

As far as certificates, you still need to buy them from NSW BMD. For Victorian records, you need to buy form PROV, but they have instant electronic delivery.
