Obit Look-up - Mary A. Dombrowski, Holyoke, Massachusetts

I would appreciate if someone would look up an obit for Mary A. Dombrowski who lived at 161 Oak Street, Holyoke, Mass. She was buried July 6, 1940 in St. Michael's Cemetery in Stratford, Connecticut in a family plot along with her mother, Anastasia Dombrowski, who died in 1939. I can't find a date of death, but assume it would be sometime between July 1-July 6 when she was buried. The cemetery record has her name as Maria, but all records I can find have her name as Mary (including her headstone). She was born in 1903. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
Obituary Collection no longer links to

I've been away from the sit for about six months and went to take a look at the obituary collection. IT USED TO BE that if the obituary appeared in a newspaper that uses legacy.com, that it hot linked into that database. Now, all it does is show the date of the publication, associated names, and link to pay (an outrageous amount of money) to Vital Check to have them pull the obit. Why anyone would do this, when you can go to the newspaper site directly and look it up on their site for free is a mystery to me.

Obituaries Writing them

I am not familiar if this topic has been shared, or discussed in this forum, but felt it may be of interest to some of you as you are researching your families and viewing obituaries whenever possible. Our newspaper just featured an article on preparing your OWN obituary, so others don't have to. More of a last gift to your family and friends, so they don't have too at such a stressful time. obitkit.com is the site, and obviously this is a kit that is for sale. I don't own it, and haven't delved into it very thoroughly, but find it interesting just the same. There are also links on this site, to ancestry.com, amongst others.

I am only posting this as a, "For what it is worth," but felt it may be of interest to some and also may have some interesting suggestions and links for researchers and those celebrating life.
Because of copyright issues, the actual obituaries cannot be on the site. Members instead create an index of citation information of the obituary in the following format: Name, age at death, location, periodical abbreviation, date of periodical publication, username of poster.

If you find your individual in the index, you can then Google search the periodical abbreviation to get the actual periodical. Then you can request the obituary from them as you'd have the name and publication date.

RootsWeb Support

I was told in an e-mail that this line that you see tells you what newspaper and what day it was in, and you take this information and request an obit lookup. I guess people see the "town" you are looking for, and if they are near that town, they will actually go to library or newspaper itself and look it up for you. Quite an undertaking; volunteers are great if you ask me.

Linda,
BTW Fold3 is far more than the Revolutionary War. It is focused more or less primarily on military records, but it does have some City Directories and other items.

It is particularly useful for Confederate Civil War era documents. I have not need to search for many Union documents, as my Yankee branch arrived mostly after the 1860s. The few times I've tried Fold3 for Union records, I was disappointed, that might just be the area I was searching.

It also has more recent records pertaining to World War II.

Hope this helps.

Andy,

Thanks. As to the Fold3, now that you say it's also owned by Ancestry.com, I'm really ticked.

I've been an Acom subscriber since they first started. I've pretty well picked clean the bulk of my ancestors. Each year, I have to think long & hard about $299 for my renewal. My biggest issue with continuing is the lack of useful new info available.

To find that Acom owns additional info & wants even more than my $299 is a big pill for me to swallow. If Fold3 is, in fact, solely about the Revolutionary War, how much useful info would I expect to find? I'd bet half the subscribers don't even have a Revolutionary War ancestor in their tree! I know of 3 direct ancestors in my family & at least 2 who were brothers to direct ancestors but I can't imagine what info there is to be gleaned for MORE money.

I don't know about you, but money is tight & inflation is killing me. I'm on a fixed income & don't have spare funds to throw around. I am sorely disappointed in Acom. Is this how we can expect other "new" info to be obtained, by paying ala carte over & above the world subscription?

Linda

Sorry, I know it's not your doing, there's just no one else to vent with/at, lol

Linda,

The three attached screenshot might help. That particular database contains no actual obituaries, it is just an index of where obituaries were published.

I would strongly disagree with the OP's statement that this database is useless

As to the site with the 50% discount... are you talking about Fold3? If so, that site is owned by Ancestry but run as a separate entity.

Andy Hatchett
www.fhiso.org
Add me to the confused too.

All I can think of it was/is a marketing tool to say they've added X number of names, additional info, etc.

There's another similar data base that [I think] has to do with those who fought in the Revolutionary War. The name of your ancestor leads you to another "paid" database where they don't tell you the fee but say that Ancestry.com subscribers get a 50% discount if you join so you can view their data (of course they don't give you any hint what that data might be). I don't know why, but for some reason I feel this is a bit misleading to all the Acom subscribers. By listing data from another paid subscription service it's kind of double-dipping by Ancestry.com. I'm quite sure Acom gets compensated by the other company for the "leads" or the advertising.

This is a pet peeve of mine with cable TV. I pay for the cable to have something to watch 24X7 but after midnight half the channels are paid programming. So the cable company gets my money for the priviledge of watching something an advertiser also paid for.
You're so welcome. I wish I could have found the actual obits - in my humble experience, it's like hitting the lottery! oh JOY! :-)
just a thought - if I don't see a record on Ancestry, I always go to LDS or the actual State Archives ... been pretty successful for at least getting some dates to move forward.
Good luck in your quest!

Thank you very much for responding to my question re: Jay H Day. I did have a small amount of information, but you've filled in some gaps for me and also given me some leads that I hadn't thought about. I very much appreciate your taking the time to search out your information and taking the time to send it along.

I wasn't aware of the obituary lead and will follow up on that for both Jay and his wife, Dorothy. Again, thank you!

I'm sorry to say I don't have the info you're requesting, but I did find the SSDI listing for his wife, which gives her last zip code:

Social Security Death Index
First Name: Dorothy
Middle Name: E
Last Name: Day
Birth Date: 19 October 1919
Social Security Number: 491-28-5278
Place of Issuance: Missouri
Last Residence: Bend, Deschutes, Oregon
Zip Code of Last Residence: 97701
Death Date: 18 March 2006
Estimated Age at Death: 87

Since he lived here:

U.S. Public Records Index, Volume 1
Name: Jay H Day
Birth Date: 13 Nov 1921
Address: 65115 Cline Falls Rd, Bend, OR, 97701-9054 (1983)
[6744 Huntington Cir SE, Salem, OR, 97306-1487 (1992)]

and in Salem, OR (between 1971-75 per Oregon City Directories), you might Google public libaries in the last zip code, and see if they can locate an obit for you for either him or her. The obit would have survivors and then you can move on from there.

Their local newspaper: "The Bulletin publishes free death notices, and full obituaries can be submitted through the advertising department. For more information, call 541-617-7825 or email obits@bendbulletin.com"

Good luck!

His obit ran in the "St. Joseph (MO) News-Press" paper (link below) --- unfortunately, the online obit archives don't go back to 2008.

WILSON, Wayne Erwin; 67; St Joseph MO; St Joseph N-P; 2008-7-15; toptom

http://www.newspressnow.com/obits/2008/jul/15/archive.html
There is a "contact us" page for the online newspaper, and I'll bet someone there could look it up for you, probably for a small fee.

If they can't, I'd suggest contacting the local town library researchers who can look it up and mail to you, again, for a small fee, I'm sure.

Good luck!

And I guess its going to stay that way too...I guess Im too ignorant to figure out how the seemingly useless information is suppose to work and you know, its too bad because even wading through the inaccuracies, obits can be such a treasure trove of information. I wish there was a more concise, accurate and useful way to access the information otherwise what is the point of ancestry putting the "link" to no where on the site?

Genealogybank as 346 obits for John O'Connell and 38 for Jack O'Connell. I checked out all that mention Chicago or Bridget or Stephen but didn't find any where the math works out to a birthdate in 1906-1908. Too many for me to read them all. You might want to consider a one month subscription for yourself, or see if your library offers it for free.

What about other types of newspaper articles? Such as an accident article that caused someone's death or what if someone was on trial for murder, or an article about a relative going into the Peace Corp?

As I understand it, anything prior to 1923 is public domain anyway. So, in the above samples, I would suppose you'd have to get permission from the newspaper if after 1923?

And, if you published a genealogy book to sell to family members: The Descendants of Joe Smith - what then? The sales would primarily be to cover costs of publication. But, if well researched and comprehensive, maybe a local library might be interested in having a copy in their reference or history department.

I know of several people distant in my family who have done hard cover genealogy books and they are sold through the local genealogical society at various functions where they have a booth. These books are basically sold to family members even though some might be very distant. That's about the only people who would be interested anyway.

I do put up copies of obits, marriages and other articles on my Ancestry.com page. Of course, for living people, only my invited relatives can see them.

I use NewspaperArchive. The same newspapers as here. But a better search engine.
