I think the OP's point wasn't so much that people copy photos to their trees, as that they do it by (e.g.) doing a snip of the image, which means that there is no notice to the OP that someone else has copied the photo, and therefore there is no opportunity to contact that person about the possibility of a mutually beneficial collaboration (and, when someone else copies the copy, that information likewise does not get back to the OP).

There has been some discussion in the past about this, and some reasons for it (e.g., to clean up a photo, enhance it digitally so it's more clear, etc.). But I do agree that doing so detracts from the main benefit of having photos/stories made available in a public tree - however, these days there is no way at all to prevent it, because anything that can be seen can be copied.
