HI,

My dad was born in Wisconsin. His birth mother's last name was Press. He was placed in an orphanage as an infant & adopted to VanVeghel's. He had two older sisters. I guess they were around 5 and 10 years old when he was born. All three went to orphanages. Not sure if they were all at the same one.
Any info you have would be appreciated!
Thanks
Brenda

I would suggest that you contact your Aunt once again and ask her politely to provide more detail--such as name of the lake where his body was found, name of town, name of county. That type of information will enable you to locate his death certificate (if he is dead), coroners report from the County Coroners office(because there would be one if he was found dead in lake), local newspaper article. You should also ask your aunt the name of his childen and where they live. The name of his wife and her address. After you get this information, you might hire a cheap attorney to write a few letters for you. It is amazing how much information a letter addressed by an attorney is able to produce. Always remember to remain polite and to thank her for anything that she does provide--you never know when you might need to ask her for something in the future. I hope you find what you are looking for.

I don't know much about this stuff, but have noticed thru the years that baptismal records can give clues or even lists the name of the father. Also, you might try looking in County Probate files---look under your mothers last name and then "In Re" as the first name. Sometimes courts hide adoption records within probate files. Probate is open to the public and baptismal might be easy to obtain also. If your mother was a minor--she may have gone to court to get aid etc. Good Luck

I understand Jennifer. The identifying search can result in the birth parents NOT wanting contact, too. In my experience of over 25 years as a volunteer, the search and contact is more positve, than negative, by far.

Those searching in Wisconsin should consider posting on a "Wisconsin Only" free adoption registry site, www.icareregistry.com. This site has a message board, also. The founder of the site, Mary, is an author, and one of the best adoption searchers in the United States, I believe. Jack

Hi, there are two possible searches for information:
1) Request for non-identifying information on your birth parents. The search is done by the State of Wisconsin, or the adoption agency. The cost for this search is an amount to not exceed $150, per law (could be less). Information such as Race, Nationality, Education, Occupations, hobbies & talents, sibling info, birth grandparent social history, ages of BPs at the time of your birth, and the reason for the adoption is usual. I can get the address to request, if you want it.

2) Search for and contact birth parents: The cost depends on how long the search and contact takes. I have heard amounts up to $300 are normal, but not the max. The state/agency would tell you upfront approx how much the cost would be. Jack, search volunteer

She was born in Wisconsin - in Milwaukee or Waukesha county. She was in a state-run orphanage when she was adopted, and was probably placed there as an infant. I just leaned that her bio-mom's last name was Netsel (that's how it sounds, not sure of spelling).

Her given name is Janice Marie, but I'm not sure if that was her name at birth or if it was given to her later. Her adopted last name was Jorgenson.

A woman named Lois was the employee working at the orphanage that placed her with her adoptive parents.

Anything you can gleen from this info, or an idea where I should look from here? All suggestions welcomed!

First off you need to find out the adoption laws in Wisconsin. Search "adoption laws in Wisconsin".
Call the counties that you mentioned (adoption dept) and ask them to please verify the info that you have. Adoption records are usually held in the county where the adoption took place.
I had to do this when I was looking for my brother, as I wasn't SURE of anything! At least you have a birthdate. I didn't even have that!!
Jennifer G.

They don't need a date. They just type the persons name into their computers and who they married, divorced, etc. comes up, showing the dates, etc. This is how I found out that my father was married more times than I thought. He was married to women that I had not even heard of.
If you want copies of these records you will have to pay for them. It can get expensive.
If you want to find out if there are any probate matters such as wills, guardianships, you have to call the probate dept.
As far as your post ending up on the wrong board, this has happened to me also. I think this may happen when we type the surname in where the mention entering the surname discussed in your post and the computer picks up the name???? I really don't kow, I'm just guessing.
Jennifer

Another thought....Try the website Privateeye.com. It lists the other names that a person has gone by, such as married names, relatives, city and states they have lived in. Then you can go to ZabaSearch for a phone number and an address. Alot of the time it also shows the Month and Year the person was born. If they arn't there, try White pages.com
Then on this site, Ancestry, you can search records, just like when you search for relatives, but over on the left click on "living people finder".
Zaba search has alot of features. You can leave a message for a person and see other messages if anyone else has left one for them. Plus there is a place to click on for a map to their address. You can also check Reunion.com or Classmates.com (which is a pay site.)
Jennifer

Jack,

I know that it's been over two years since I last responded to a post, however, I am hoping that you are still willing to assist. The problem is this, my mother, who used to be in possession of my original birth certificate and adoption papers, has either lost them or is lying to me, either way she won't let me have access to them. Additionally, if my mother purjured herself and stated that she did not know who the father of her child (me) was, and my original birth certificate states 'none' under father, would he have had to give up his parental rights? Strange situation to say the least, but if you could forward me any information you might have I would appreciate it.

Thank you.

Tammy

Noel was born in the mid 50's to Norvin and Adele Schmidt in the Detroit, Michigan area. Adele already had a daughter named Dondee. Both children were adopted by Adele's new husband, so Noels last name is no longer Schmidt and hasn't been for at least 40 years. I am Norvin's first born child and would like to connect with my half brother.Do any of these names sound familiar?

Tammy, if your birth father was listed on the Final Adoption Decree, or the original birth certificate, he would have to sign a Termination of Parental Rights form.
If no birth father is listed, no paternal termination is required before the adoption could take place.

It is possible that your birth father does not know about you and was never told. If you knew who your mother's dating friends were before you were born, you might have a piece of the puzzle. It looks like your birth mother is the only person who knows who the birth father might be.

If you email me at hnasep@sbcglobal.net, I can send you an attachment on the Adoption Laws.
Hi, I am an adoption search volunteer. I suggest that you place a Consent to Waiver Confidentiality in your daughter's adoption file. This is your right as birth mother, under Wisconsin Adoption Law. When your daughter searches for you, this will be helpful. I can send you more info (attachment) on this and the Wisconsin Adoption Records Law, if you will email me hnasep@sbcglobal.net.

Jack, Manitowoc, WI
