I put Tongue in on the census for SD and found that there were one or two families there in the 1920's adn 1930. Only they went by the name of Black Tongue. In some cases they spelled it Blacktongue. You might consider spelling it these ways when searching.
Depending on the age of the mother, she may or may not have been born yet, and on the 1930 census. But one of these could be her family. Do you have anything else to go on? mh

With an exact date of birth you can search by first name and birth date, giving you possibilities for parents. Then looking at the 1900 census, you may just find her...
http://apps.sd.gov/applications/PH14Over100BirthRec/index.as...

She first shows up on the 1905 South Dakota State census at the age of 6. Clark Mott is 63, Flora M Mott, 54. At first I thought that maybe they are her grandparents. But the 1900 census for the Motts, show Flora having no children.

I am trying to locate information on my mom, Denise K. Phillips. According to the records we do have, she was born on or around 11 April 1950, in Yankton, SD. Her name at birth was Mary Ann Tongue. She was adopted by the Phillips family in 1954, in Binghampton, NY.

Unfortunately, this is all the information that we have on her. I have been unsuccessful in locating a family by the surname Tongue in South Dakota, and am unable to find any resources for SD births.

If anyone has any kind of lead, it would be greatly appreciated.

As I understand it my grandmother birth name may have been Flossie, last name Ashmore was born in Ashdown, AK in 1923 and was possibly the 11th child. She was taken in by a nurse (Mary Randolph) in Rapid City, SD. I am not sure if the whole family ended up there or the circumstances of getting to Rapid City. If you can provide any possible answers it would be helpful.

Hi, did you look under Google?

There was a Kay Shields mentioned on the knitting website by a Judy Wayne. Someone she met at a Stitches Event. You might email her and ask what she remembers about the woman. This was posted in 2000, so you might get a bad email address. If so, look up this woman, then try again.

JudyLWayne@email.msn.com

Penny
