St. Thomas Orphanage

One of the monumental building projects of the pioneer days of the diocese was the construction of St. Thomas Orphanage. Bishop Bonacum, traveling with horse and buggy, canvassed the Diocese for funds. After a decade of patient attempts, unremitting dedication and indomitable courage in the face of criticism, the orphanage at 4001 South 27th Street was completed without debt in 1906, at a cost of $80,000. St. Thomas Orphanage was finally closed, yet its duties, especially adoption services, were absorbed by Catholic Social Services of the Diocese of Lincoln.

Unfortunately adoption records even that far back can't be accessed without a court order. There is an Elsie V. McKenzie listed as buried in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.

http://www.lincolnfh.com/

I am looking for any information concerning the St. Thomas Orphanage in Lincoln,Ne., around the 1919 timeframe. My father was adopted from this orphanage in 1919.
Hello! I am helping my sister in law try to find her birth parents. She has sent in the required paperwork to Vital Records to start the search, but here is what was told to her by her adoptive parents (both deceased). She was born in Omaha, NE on Sept. 20, 1970 to a young woman who was at the time a college student. The father was never mentioned. She was adopted at 1 day old. Please know that she is not trying to intrude upon anyone's life, and if ANY of this sounds familiar to someone, PLEASE e-mail me and any and all responses will be held in strict confidence. Thank you, Heather
Helping my step father out, he was born 1949 in Red Willow County Nebraska and lived in Nebraska most of his life.

I suggested he consider DNA testing to at least suggest a possible surname. He DNA tested at the 67 marker level and is a 65/67 match to Childress and a 64/67 match to both Childress and Childers surnames. So we have a possible surname to start with, and there were Childers in the 1930 Red Willow County census.

His adopted mother told him she knew nothing about his parents, only that he was about 6 months old when she adopted him. If she knew anything, she would have told him, but she did not know anything.
My step father is very interested in learning who his family is.

That would be Havelock, NE...a small town taken over into Lincoln, Lancaster Co., NE. Have you tried the Vital Records department in Lincoln? Check the Lincoln Journal newspaper's archives, back then they always put births in the newspaper.

I don't believe Havelock has a newspaper, everyone gets the Journal. Email me and I'll talk with my husband about other ways to find information, he was raised there. Perhaps I can check his year book, I'll have to see if he has one for that year, if not I'm sure we know someone in Lincoln who has one.
My husband's mother (Sharon) was put up for adoption along with several brothers and sisters (Sharon, Shirley, Vivian, deceased sister, Robert, Donnie, John, Ronnie). They have found their mother Joyce Tiff (deceased). They claimed to be missing a baby brother, however, his mother claims there were 14 children in all. There ancestry seems to be lost. There was a story that the father Robert Tiff died from a rather strange death. The information you have provided sound as though you could be from this family.

Also suggest searching on the SSDI (Social Security Death Index) for Johnson,Custer County, NE. If you enter Arnold you will come up with three names. If you leave out Arnold you will come up with many more Johnsons from the county. With the dates you can search for their obits. Someone who is related to Ruth Laverna Johnson may mention her in their obit with her new surname if she married.
http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi

There is this Website that may help:
http://www.birthmotherresources.com/birth_mother/birth_mothe...

Also, you might try searching on City Directories from 1953 and on for Arnold, Custer County, NE. There should not be very many Johnsons for that small town. There are other leads as well. You might try contacting the Custer County Historical Society in Broken Bow, NE. They should either have city directories on file or be able to tell you where you might find them. Their staff may be able to help you through their research library to find clues to lead you to Ruth Laverna Johnson:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~necuster/
See Virtual Nebraska, click on Custer County, then Arnold to see history of Custer County and the towns:
http://www.casde.unl.edu/history/index.php
I have an aunt who had a baby in 1946 at the age of eighteen. It was the big secret nobody talked about. She still won't discuss it. She lived in Lincoln, NE when she got pregnant, went to a small NE town to have the baby, then returned. The child was adopted by someone she knew and she has had a relationship with her son her whole life, without admitting to him who she is.
Good luck to you on your quest.

Re: Foss Adoption Nebraska 1915 - New Information

I have some new information on my father's biological family. My father's given name was Riley Foss, born January 10, 1915 in Omaha, Nebraska. His father was John Foss born abt 1887, who had at least 3 brothers, Teddy, Walter and Melvin and also two sisters, names unknown. There is also a James mentioned who was 18 years old in 1915. I don't know who the parents of these boys are. I am told John Foss was born in Austria.

John Foss born abt 1887, married Julia Galouski born abt 1888(spelling of the last name might not be correct). Julia had a sister named Mary and a brother named George. They were all born in Austria.

John and Julia also had a daughter named Olga Foss born March 23 or 25, 1914 in Saint Paul, MN, so I am told. She was probably also given up for adoption. I have no leads on her.

The web site I had up on my father is no longer working. When I get it up and running again, I will let everyone know of the new web site address.

Thanks for any help on all of this.

Jane Case

I can't help you, but I did want to wish you luck. I knew your adoptive parents many years ago...probably when you were a child. My great aunt and uncle are Leonard and Elizabeth Elmshaeuser. My grandmother, Anna Launer, was Elizabeth's older sister.
My deceased father, born Stanley Mckenzie, Jan 11,1919, was adopted by John R. Gracy and Lillian Gracy in Oct of 1919.
Thanks for the reply! I am trying to help my husband find his birth family. I have question for anyone that might know- if an adoption was private and the records are sealed, can we write a letter to the county judge to see about opening the records or do we need to get a lawyer to do that? Thanks- Heather

If the adoption was through the Catholic Church you can call them. I am at work right now but I can check to see if I still have some phone numbers and send them out to you. Good Luck. I have been trying to find info about a child that my grandmother had and the State is not willing to help other than allowing my father to send the form to open the records to the adoptee if she is looking. Oh, I also have a town history book and I think a Schuyler family is listed - I will check for it also.

The 1930 lists Gladys as a teacher which she learned to be while at the Home. I would really like to find you. Nebraska is a closed adoption state and they will not release your records.

Wow, you really don't have much to go on. Are you the person that was put up for adoption? I was adopted too and kinda just found one of my half sisters not long ago. I would love to help you in your search but don't know what other info I can offer. Can you go back in the history of Schyuler and try to find any deceased lawyers and see if the law firm they worked for is still open? Otherwise I would take this to a judge to get records unsealed. Let me know how you come out or if there is anything else I can do to help. If I think of another avenue you can try I will let you know. Good Luck

I contacted my sister-in-law today and she will be going to Arnold for their alumni over Memorial Day weekend. She was born in 1930 so she is probably a little older than your birth mother. Do you know about how old your mother would have been in 1953. That would help a little.

I am coming to Nebraska City, NE with my wife next week. While she is at the quilt event she is going to, I want to try to do some genealogical research on a Friday and over a weekend. I need suggestions as to what might be available in Lincoln which isn't too far away and also Nemaha Co. where some relatives lived.

I would like to find out when some of my relatives died. Any suggestions there? It looks to me like you can't get any certificates in NE unless you are a son, husband or other real close relative.

Any help would be appreciated.

Garland Edgell
