If you could go to a library where they have access to ancestry.com online or you know someone who does, you could get her social security application. Wherever she died, perhaps the funeral home has records where her son may have signed something. Or do you think he was adopted out? Is there an obituary in newspaper in the place wehre she died?

I'm not sure I'm going to be much help. I don't know who her parents are. I suspect that her father is one of the siblings of Moses & John Moss. I have 3 circumstantial pieces of evidence to support my suspicion.

1) John Moss is the only Moss I could locate on the tax lists for Montgomery county KY, which is where Emily is claimed to be born in 1814. Unfortunately, all his children are well documented and she isn't one of them.

2) A descendant of a sibling of John, Moses, came up as a potential DNA match against my DNA test. Emily may not fit in this family unless a date for one of the children or our date is off a year.

3) A Vincent Moss was living a few miles to the west of James & Emily (Moss) Gibson in Putnam county. (By the way, if it wasn't Moses it was a sibling that had a son named Vincent.)

The best I can do is that we are probably tied into this Moss family, but I don't know where.

There is a 70-80 year old Woman living with James & Emily in 1840, since his parents are account for this is likely her mother.

That's all I've got on my Emily a lot of speculation, and potential ties to a very large and extensive Moss family.

I have been looking for any information on 'James' Moss, adopted by John and Nancy. They had a boarder (servant according to the 1880 census) by the name of eliza or Lzzie Wells. I checked on her background and she had a lot of moss relatives in Kentucky. Can you help? I think 1874 is correct according to the 1880 census.

James had 'Moss' uncles and grandparents. Members of that family are as follows; Lucy and Vincent Moss (Kentucky), James Moss, george Moss, Sela Moss (Indiana).

Their was a boarder with John and nancy Alpaugh Moss when James was adopted. her name was Lizzie or eliza Wells.
Last night I added a copy of the Vigo County record of Mabel Jessie's marriage to William H. Davis. Have you seen this document? It indicates that her first marriage (to Mr. Lemen I presume) ended by death in 1905. I still don't the the first name of Mr. Lemen. I wish I could find a record of that marriage. According to her response on the 1900 Census she must have married for the first time in 1894 since that record gives the length of her marriage as 6 years.

This is an interesting mystery, and I'm curious too. John W Canary is my 1st cousin 4x removed, so I'm anxious to find out the real story on this. I've looked at the 1880 and 1900 Census and have the same data you have, and can come to the same conclusions you have.

I'm familiar with the area, and I know the Pierce family name is pretty common in that area. It's been a prominent family in and around the Sullivan area for years. I'm not at all familiar with the Lemen family name.

Great mystery! I hope it can be solved!

George Roe & Charlotte Hamilton (birth parents)

Hi everyone! My name is Maryann Wilson and my mother and I are trying to find her birth parents. Their names are George Clifton Roe born in Illinois on September 22, 1922 and Charlotte Pascal Hamilton born in Kansas on December 26, 1925. The birth dates for my mothers biological parents may be wrong as they did not keep accurate records in the early 1900's. My mothers name is Betty Ann Smith (birth name is Betty Ann Wilson) and she was born on December 13, 1943 in Eureka, California. My mother was adopted by Ulysses Wilson and Mary Ann Hoffman (aka RoseMary Birchem). Adoption birth certificate states my mother was born on December 13, 1944 (one year later than the original birth certifcate) in Little Rock, Arkansas. My mother was also told that she had an identical twin sister named Betsy Ann. Even though my mother was adopted over 60 years ago, we are still hoping to find her birth parents and/or any brothers/sisters or any other family she may have. If anyone has any information whatsoever, please feel free to reply to this post or you can email me at nursegirl121272@msn.com or my mother at bettyboop1213432000@yahoo.com

Thank you!

Adoption of Great-Grandfather

Hi,
My great-grandfather was adopted in the early 1930's. He was born in Tell City, Indiana, and I've been told that his parents kept his sister, but put him up for adoption.

He was named Richard Ralph Thompson by his adoptive parents, Tom & Bessie (Paddock) Thompson. I know that he didn't have much contact with his birth family, but my great-grandmother, Edna Thompson did.

I recently found a newspaper article cut-out from 1972 in a Tell City, IN newspaper celebrating the 50th wedding anniversary of Casper and Toddy Cronin. On the top of the cut-out, written in my great-grandmother's handwriting, was "Dick's mother's brother."

Mentioned in the article as his sisters were Mrs. Carl (Odele) Leehy and Mrs. Leslie (Sylvia) Coultas of Evansville, Indiana. I am aware that Mrs. Coultas is still living in Evansville as of 04 Feb. 2011, but I have yet to find out anything of Mrs. Leehy. I do not know if they are his birth parents, but I do believe my great-grandmother, so one of them must be it.

If you know anything about the matter, please contact me. I don't wish for a relationship if you don't wish for one. I only wish to find out who my great-great grandparents are and why my great-grandfather was given up for adoption.

My email is abryant@parallax.ws and if you are serious about responding to this, my cell phone number can be given through a personal message. Thank you and I hope that someone can help me.

Am going through the process of getting my adoption file in Indiana: all you need it your mothers death certificate and a letter of permission to search from your birth father. Contact the state of Indiana (vital records/adoptions) for the forms. They will tellyou any additional information you will need. Although Indiana is tough on getting the original records, it can be done withough hiringsomeone to do so on your behalf. You can obtain the death certificate in person or via mail - and you will need a photo ID (State issued wher ever you happen to be living at present.)

Well sweetie, prepare yourself for a what could be a long uphill battle, start with the adoption registries and get your name on the list, that way if your birthparents are looking for you there will be a match.
i wanted to see if anyone had and suggestions for locating birth parents. i was born on 11/18/75 in east chicago in. i dont know much about my birth parents. i have gotten several stories from my family (who really are the greatest and i love so very much). i havent pushed my parents for information but really do want medical information. i havent really started to look because i am not sure where to start.
