Using another forum in 2003, Robin Evans said, “The agency that initially handled the adoption was Pierce Warwick, now closed.”
I do not know if the agency is truly closed. Some Internet sites list it under its correct spelling:
Peirce-Warwick Adoption Service, 929 L St NW, Washington DC 20001-4357; phone: 202-289-1510 or -0297.
BURGESS, Linda Cannon (1911- ) is the author of “The Art of Adoption,” published in 1976. “The author was an adoption worker employed by Peirce-Warwick Adoption Service of the Washington Home for Foundlings, in Washington, D.C. She was responsible for over 900 adoptions. She retained colored photos of relinquishing mothers to show to the adoptees later.”
I sat next to Mrs. Burgess at a function in the 1970s and asked her why the name of the agency was spelled “Peirce” instead of “Pierce.” In retrospect, this was not a smart question to ask of a former employee. But that’s the kind of guy I am.
