Forbes Charles Johnston Laing in Aberdeen 1897

Surnames: Laing Johnston
Hello, I would really love some advice please. My great grandad was born in 1897 to Elizabeth Adam Laing (a watchmaker's shop assistant). He was named Forbes Charles Johnston Laing.
The next information we have is the 1901 census which shows him as the adopted son of Charles and Betsy Johnston. The name seems a bit too much of a coincidence. Do you think Charles could be the biological father of Forbes (i.e had an affair with Elizabeth)? Or could it be that the adoption was planned ahead of time and so Forbes was named after the adoptive father?

Elizabeth's father was a tailor who employed two men and two boys and Charles was a master tailor.

Any insight would be welcomed.
