Hello Rebecca,
I have just seen your query regarding St Catherines House, Newark.
As you already know it was a home for unmarried mothers situated on the corner of Wilson Street and Kings Road, Newark. I too have been trying to find information about the home, as I had an Aunt who was in there in the mid/late 30's.
Apparently it was run by nuns and the person in charge was a Sister Rivers. We are unsure if my Aunt had a child whilst she was in there.
My Aunt was at some point moved from St Catherine's to Croyden, Surrey, but we don't know when, why or where, and we can't find this out. Obviously they must have moved some girls around the country for some reason.
I contacted the Family Care Service in Nottingham after seeing on Google that they held the records, I got really exited, but they weren't that helpful to be honest. According to them they don't have all the records for St Catherine's as there was a flood at some point in the cellar of the home and a lot of the records were destroyed. That was about the extent of their help!
I have sent you a picture of the home in case you haven't seen one.
Not a lot of information but I hope there was a little there to help you?
Best regards,
Sonia
