Re: Where to start! Malcolm Roberts

Hello,
This might sound like a stupid question, but when was the birth certificate actually purchased?
The reason I ask is because if Malcolm was legally adopted then there should be a note in the right hand margin of any birth certificate purchased after the legal adoption was made. If the certificate you have was purchased at the time of birth, then the chances are that it would not have any notation on it.
In addition, if the certificate was purchased direct from the local register office as opposed to the GRO, then the notation might have been missed off.
You need to establish for certain if he was actually adopted.
Perhaps you would care to send me a copy of the certificate you have (.jpeg or .pdf format)
I will be happy to discuss this with you if you care to contact me direct on avril.rosswright@virgin.net
I have been helping reunite people separated through adoption for over 25 years, on a non-profit basis and I have a personal adoption connection.
Hope to hear from you

Where to start! Malcolm Roberts

I am looking for information about my uncle Malcolm Roberts born 3rd August 1934 in Paddington, London. Malcolm was the youngest son of Edward Hansford Roberts and Beatrice Mary Roberts (formerly Rogers). The birth certificate states Malcolm was born at St Mary's Hospital and the family lived at 46, Fermoy Road, Paddington. No one has ever mentioned Malcolm not even my late father. Malcolm has one sibling still alive and my aunt only vaguely remembers seeing a piece of paper after the death of her mother Beatrice stating that he had been given away. I find it hard to believe that information as important as this has never been discussed in the family. Can anyone suggest what I need to do to start my research? All I have is a birth certificate.

As a birth relative of an adoptee, you have a legal right to be told your biological birth history by the government.

How that works as regards overseas residents, I don't know, it's a matter of suck it and see I guess.

A point to bear in mind with this is that your mother might have had siblings or half siblings that she knew nothing about, and they will br your birth relatives too of course.

Start by applying to the UK GRO for a copy of your mother's LONG VERSION adoption certificate, which is the eqivalent of a birth certificate for an adoptee.

It will only list her date of birth and her adoptive parentage, but it will also list the court which handled the adoption proceedings and which issued the adoption order.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/fees.asp

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/most_customer...

********************************************************
These links will be your next step, mainly the first one, but the others may be of use to you as well.

At a minimum, you will be told your mother's birth name and her birth mother's name, and probably her age.

You will probably have to provide proof that your mother is now deceased.

https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records/the-adoption-contact-reg...

http://www.pac.org.uk/

http://www.adoptionsearchreunion.org.uk/default.htm

**********************************************
Court adoption records are sealed, but access can be granted at the discretion of the authorities, such access is more likely to be granted in older cases such as this, in which the birth parents are now probably deceased, if you can find out which court handled the adoption, talk to the clerk of the court.

Also, if there was an adoption agency involved, they may grant access to the adoption agency file, they do so sometimes even with adoptions in more recent years, so ask if an adoption agency was involved.

The court or adoption agency records may also list the name of the birth father.
Re: Adoption beginner's query

Joanna, your question isn't, and doesn't appear as, stupid.

That's possible, in fact likely, courts were not involved in adoptions in England until 1927.

It's only since courts became involved in 1927 that a second, adoptive birth registration has been created for adopted children.

Prior to 1927 adoptions would have been arranged on an informal, or semi formal basis.

Either privately by mutual agreement between the people involved, or perhaps also with the services of a solicitor, or via a local authority or charitable child welfare organisation, or via a private adoption agency, or a charitable adoption agency.

If you knew,or could find out, if there was an organisation involved, there might still be records available, and there might be an adoption file.

You didn't say how you know that an adoption was involved.

On the issue of not finding her birth registration, well chances are that the adoptive family would have given her their surname.

The other, outside possibility, is that she retained her birth surname, and if so, the reason that you couldn't find her birth registration, might be, that you were lookng in the wrong time period, unless you are already aware of how birth registrations work in relation to the months of registration.

Parents have 6 weeks in which to register a birth, and until recent years, births were registered in one of 4 quarters of the year.

So, for example, a birth in March, might not be registered until the April/May/June quarter of the year.

If the birth was in December for example, it might not be registered until the January/February/March quarter of the following year.

It may not be of much help to you, but I posted a message with links which explains all about post adoption issues.

http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/topics.adoption.uk.england.adop...

target="_blank">http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/most_customer...

Please note the following, ( which are general comments, and which are not specifically related to this particualar message thread ).

1) In cases where a birth took place less than 50 years ago the U.K. registrationn authorities will not issue birth certificates unless the applicant can supply certain specific pieces of information, in particular, the full name of the birth mother, and the exact date of birth.

2) If a birth father is listed on a birth registration and on the related birth certificate, it does not necessarily mean that the parents were married to each other at the time of the birth.

That is because, at the time of the initial birth registration, if the parents are not married to each other, the child's birth will be registered with the same surname as that of the mother's maiden surname.

However, if at the time of the initial registration, or later, if the birth father formally acknowledges paternity, then a second birth registration will be made, in which the child's surname will be the same as the father's surname, and the father will also be listed on the birth certificate which relates to that second birth registration.

That second birth registration takes legal precedence and the father's surname becomes the child's legal surname.

That is why some people have 2 birth registrations in different surnames.

3) It used to be the case that birth registrations were listed by the quarter of the year in which they were registered, in more recent years they have been listed by the month in which they were registered.

Parents have 6 weeks in which to register a birth, so a birth in one quarter may not be registered until the following quarter, the same thing applies in regard to the more recent system of registering births by a particular month.

A birth late in one year may not be registered until early in the following year.

4) The long version biological Birth Certificate of an adoptee will be marked with the word, adopted.

Only ever get long version Birth Certificates, because they contain more information than short version Certificates.

5) Courts were not involved in adoptions in England and Wales until 1927, court adoption records are sealed, but access may be granted at the discretion of the authorities, upon application to the Clerk of the court concerned.

Such access is more likely to be granted in older cases.

The name of the court which granted the adoption order will be listed on the long version Adopttion Certificate, which is the official name for what is sometimes informally referred to as their adoptive Birth Certificate.

Their long version Adoption Certificate will not mention their biological birth parent or parents.

Their short version Adoption Certificate will not mention the adoption.

6) Since the mid 1970's adoptees have had a legal right to be told their true biological birth history and parentage by the authorities, birth relatives have also had some assistance available to them since that date.

7) If an adoption organisation was involved in the adoption, the authorities can make that known to the adoptee and such organisations will often give the adoptee access to the adoption file which the organisation created for that person.

Good luck with your search.

I've just come across an adoption which happened in London in about 1914.
I've found the marriage and death of the woman in question, but can find no birth registration.
Is it the case that her birth would have been registered in her original name and then not re-registered in her new adoptive name?
Or would it have been more usual to have her birth re-registered in her adoptive name?
Sorry if this appears a stupid question!
Many thanks for any help anyone can give me.
Joanna
Tracing adoption from 1939

Hi my grandmother was adopted in 1939, all I currently have is her adoption certificate.

She was told quite a bit about her adoption and her birth mother visited her when she was younger. I believe she then went back to her native ireland in the mid 1940s.

The name she was always told for her mother was Bridget Mary Shearne (not 100% sure on spelling). She fell pregnant whilst working as housekeeping staff for a well know concert pianist and gave birth to my grandmother Eileen in July 1938 in pimlico.

She was then adopted by Harry and Alice Fisher in January 1939.

How do I go about finding her original birth certificate? I have found no details at all for Bridget and can only guess at who the father may have been.

We don't have the adoption file as my grandmother is housebound and therefore put off by the need for a meeting with an official first.

Thank you

I have now tracked down the original birth certificate sheehan was the correct spelling.

It's thrown up more questions than answers, the mothers name is correct and it provides her address where she worked as a housekeeper and companion.

She appears at the same address from 1937 until 1939. The others listed at this address are not who we expected so Don't think the pianist tale is true. Unless she moved into this address very late in 1937 already pregnant. It seems odd that she would have been kept on if this were the case.

I'm not sure where to go from here in finding anymore information.

Would the adoption file contain any more info than what I've already discovered?

Well Mister Voss, " desperation" type comments often baffle me when the original message posters don't even seem to bother to acknowledge any responses to their enquiries, or even to log in once in a while.

I hope you're a bit more attentive than that.

It also puzzles me about comments such as wanting to find any other possible descendants, and yet not much interest seemingly being initially shown about the birth mother, who may well have had other relatives.

However, perhaps you all already know something about her but didn't bother to say so, and you obviously had somehow found out about the first child.

I checked the births BTW from 1940 to 1960 and the 2 brothers are the only Hoffmann births in London with a birth mother's maiden surname of Hoffmann.

Well as regards the brothers, that's pretty much a done deal because as has been said, their names will have been changed upon adoption, so the only way to find David John is via the links and procedures above.

Probably the same adoption agency, ( if any ), would have been used in both cases I'm guessing.

So as I suspected, there was a bit more to her forenames than was apparent.

I see no marriages for her, but there are two other records for her.

One is a death registration which is very probably her, and BTW, there is no English birth registration which corresponds to this death registration.

Civil registration event: Death
Name: HOFFMANN, Milada
Registration district: Lambeth
County: London
Year of registration: 2001
Month of registration: August
Date of Birth: 4th September 1914
District no: 2411D
Reg no: D65
Ent no: 168
DOR: 801

http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/Services/CommunityLiving/Births/Bi...

http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/Services/CommunityLiving/DeathsFun...

The other is a naturalisation record which is almost certainly her.

***************************************
THE LONDON GAZETTE, 3RD MAY 1960
Page 3129

NATURALISATION
List of Aliens to whom Certificates of Naturalisation
have been granted by the Secretary of State, and
whose Oaths of Allegiance have been registered in the
Home Office during the month of March, 1960.
The date in each case is the date of naturalisation.

Hoffmann, Milada {known as Maria Staines),
Czechoslovakia; Clerk/Typist; 2 Russell Road,
London W.14. 12th February I960.

************************************
Further info from the U.K. National Archives at Kew in London shows that her Naturalisation Certificate number was BNA58947

There is no indication that she formally changed her name to Maria Staines, but she didn't have to, in Britain people can pretty much call themselves whatever they like, provided that they don't do so for criminal purposes and that they do give their official names on formal paperwork.

You should be able to get a copy of her naturalistaion papers from Kew, and that should give her Date of birth and her parentage, which should provide a good basis for further research into her family history.

http://blog.nationalarchives.gov.uk/blog/discover-more-than-...

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-perso...

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycatalogu...

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/contact/contactform.asp?i...

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/contact/

There are a number of other post 1940 Naturalisation records at Kew for Czechoslovakian hoffmanns, who may or may not be related perhaps.

Naturalisation Certificate: Eva Susane Hoffmann.
Thankyou Michael,

No disrespect assumed and no offence taken nor intended, and my own apologies and I hope that the lady is well.

I had assumed that illness might be a possibility of course, but I so often see messages and information apparently ignored, including other people's replies to inquirers, that it sometimes gets to be a bit tedious and puzzling.

Until the U.K. law was changed in about 1975, post adoption information was pretty much permanently secret, and intended to remain so for ever.

Only the government and it's authorised post adoption agencies can access and use the information about an adoptee's post adoption name and identity.

In case you sister in law and her father needs her father's original birth record, I will send that to you in a private message.

Good luck with your search.

However, sometimes health and personal circumstances prevent that replies get answered and receive the attention they deserve. Please accept our apologies, my sister in law's non-response was not a sign of disrespect.

We shall take your advice and findings in order to proceed searching for my father-in-law's brother David John. As soon as we have more information, we will post them here to bring more light into the tunnel.

Best wishes from Hamburg, Germany
Michael

Carol - can you see the 11 year old Grace Lovejoy in Willesden on the 1911 census? Could this be her? She is the right age and when I looked for a birth it is registered in Wandsworth which registers Battersea-just like Grace Kynaston/Tower in 1901. May be red-herring - but as you say foster/adoptions were much more cavalier in those days and were often not permanent.
Pamela

Grace Tower b.1900, Battersea, London, England, adopted child of Henry Samuel Kynaston and Maud Mary Winston

Can anyone please help me trace what happened to the adopted daughter of my great, great uncle Henry Samuel Kynaston (1859-1942) and Maud Mary Winston (1863-1929).
Her name was Grace Tower and she was born in Battersea in approx. 1900. She is on the 1901 census as their adopted daughter, aged 10 months. At the time they lived in St. Pancras, London, England and Henry was a railway detective.
In 1911 when she would only have been 10 years old there is no mention of her at the address of her parents and I cannot find her staying in the home of any relative (so far).
I cannot find any death record for her under the name Grace Tower, nor Grace Kynaston.
The only other avenue I have is that perhaps her parents changed her name completely and she is still alive at the 1911 census, somewhere but I have hit a brick wall. There is nobody left alive in my family who I can ask who would know the whole story.
Can anyone help me shed some light onto this please.
I would be very grateful for any help.
Best wishes,
Rebecca.

The child I know of, Mary Waldron, was born in 1958/59 in London I am told. However, there might have been other children before she married my grandfather, Vernon Ronald Saunders. I'm hoping someone has some knowledge of any of these people!

Hello- Can anyone help me?
My mother was adopted. She was born 23.04.47 at The Queen Charlotte in Hammersmith. She was named Diane Parsonage- born to a Doris Parsonage and father Peter C.W Hayes.

She was adopted in High Court London (officially in june 1948) through the adoption association, knightsbridge, London.

Doris was in the WAAF as a nursing orderly and later worked at Guys Hospital.
Peter was (for a short while) I believe in the RAF. They met at Elation Dance, Bridgnorth about a year before my mother was born.
With the help of a lovely man, I have found info on Peter and that he boarded a ship to Hong Kong and on to Malaya to work on a plantation.
They did not stay together, although talk of marriage. They financially could not afford to keep my mother and were both young (19 and 22 ish).
She gave Mill Lane,Hampstead, London as her first address and then 101 Broomwood Rd, London as her next permanent address in 1948. There was also mention of a Craven Hill Gardens in Bayswater. I don't think Doris was born in London- no records for the area, but we think Liverpool.
Peter had Marine Lodge (Essex) as an address (Walton- On-The-Naze). I don't know if Peter returned from abroad or not.

Any info (no matter how small) greatly appreciated!

Thank you!
He was almost certainly given up for adoption but no trace of him has been found; presumably his name was changed by his adoptive parents. General Records Office cannot help as this occurred before the 1926 adoption act. Please can anyone suggest where I might look for a record or information?
Thanks
Bernard
