Query: Love child's adoptive surname.

I was adopted as a baby in the 1960's, and have started taking the first steps in discovering who I might be and where I came from.
I know my birth name, and I have a name which I thought was probably my birth mother's maiden name. My [married] mother had an affair and the result was me.
BUT, I was wondering which names the adopted babies who were a result of an affair would be registered with.
Would it definitely be the mother's married name and maiden name, or perhaps could it be the birth father's surname and mother's married name/maiden name?
I'm supposing that it could be either and I'll never know for sure, but I thought I'd ask in case anyone's got any suggestions which it is most likely to be.
(I just got to thinking that my mother's husband might not be too happy to be lending his name to his wife's little faux pas!)
Thanks in advance for any info.

There is no set rule with this. The husband may or may not be listed on the birth certificate...it depends on their relationship and what he was willing to do to make the child "look" legitimate. It could just be the mother's name and if I had to put money on it I would lean toward the husband not putting his name on the document and letting the wife put all her details down without him.
