The prison in Richmond you're speaking of is the Virginia State Penitentiary (ugh, I've known some in there). Perhaps you could check the genealogy.com pages to locate the Jenkins(es) in the Richmond area during your time-frame, who may have been ancestors. I know it's a long shot but sometimes folks use the (paid-subscriber-site you can join)

I don't know your situation financially but it's a great site and well worth the enormous amount of records and location info it offers. A male Jenkins is so much easier to find than a female Jenkins. Without concentrating on the name initially, try the location, the area, and the work-place (you say he was a guard). Finding this man is a possibility. The only possible problem would be finding the RIGHT Jenkins if there was more than one. Then you'll need to step in deeper.

I'm not a researcher officially but I'm looking for someone too and I'm not proud. I look everywhere, anywhere, and have a good idea that finding your gentleman can be done.
