In 2008 you joined an online registry which is not confidential. You mentioned Gale MARCUS as an attorney for your birth mother.

I am commenting today because I saw Gale's name in a book about the black market. It's on page 13 (and others). To read the book online, go to:

http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015073363056;vie...

Reg Niles
RegNMINiles#cs.com
(change pound sign to at sign)

P.S. In case Ancestry.com truncates the URL, I will repeat it below, divided into 3 parts.

http://babel.hathitrust.org/

cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015073363056;

view=1up;seq=5
Your mother should send for a copy of her original birth certificate. This will have her birth parents' names and ages when she was born as well as their address. Illinois now allows adopted adults to get their OBC.

Hi Natalie!
Unfortunately I don't know her specific birth date or age at the time of my Mom's birth. However, the court documents state that she was of legal age so I would assume that means she was at least 18 at the time.

Hi!
I'm looking for any information on Betty Ann Hoy. My grandmother recently passed away and in sorting out her estate we discovered the court records pertaining to my Mother's adoption. We always knew my mom was adopted but we never knew her biological mother's name. My mom was born on 4/22/50 and adopted from The Cradle adoption agency in Illinois. According to the court papers her only surviving parent was Betty Ann Hoy. The only other information I have is the fact that music was very important to her. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to know where I came from. It feels like a huge part of my history is missing. I'm hoping that perhaps you can help me find it :)

I have two free copies of volume 1 of a book I published this year---a book intended for libraries and adoption professionals. BookLocker.com sent me these copies at no charge in order to obtain author’s approval. So I can give them away for no charge.

The title of the book is: The Reg Niles Searchbook for Adult Adoptees, 2nd edition. The Library of Congress has accepted a free copy (vol. 1 & 2) for their permanent collection. A magazine called Library Journal published a favorable book review on Apr. 15, 2013.

Anyone can purchase vol. 2 from BookLocker.com at the list price plus shipping. My sister, who lives in New York State, was not charged sales tax when she purchased the book by mail.

Reg Niles
RegNMINiles@cs.com

DOB 7.14/62, searching for birth family, links to Quebec/Maine/Massachusetts/Florida?

This post is written by Tom Schiferl's wife, Christine, acting as research assistant :-)

We have been searching for his birth family since March of 2010. Tom's parents never shared any details of his adoption, and he never asked for information out of respect to them. His adoptive Dad and Mom have passed away in the last few years, and he is left with no birth family other than his son.

Tom's birth parents must be at least in their mid 70's or 80's, and it would be so nice to connect with them before they pass. Even if the birth parents have passed, or don't wish to connect, it would be nice for Tom and his son to know their extended family.

After Tom's parents passed, I hired Omnitrace to find his birth family with no results. We subsequently requested non-identifying information. Florida is a "closed record" adoption state. Meaning the government holds all the records and documents, and will only release "non-identifying" information. The only way to find your parent/s, is if one of them officially registers with the State of Florida and agrees to be contacted or release the information. So, the adopted child is left with no or little info, no health records and no rights.

The only info we have been about Tom's birth family is that his mother was 26 years of age at the time of birth (would now be about 76+/-), and from a “New England state” (US). We think she might have stayed with friends or family in Florida for her pregnancy/birth.

The involved law firm was Carey and Harrison, and the adoption agency was Family and Children's Service Inc.. The law firm is no longer in business, and I have not been able to find who took over the practice or find any records. Local legal firms have told us they destroy the records after 10 years, so we don’t have much hope to find documents from this source.

Tom was born July 14th, 1962, at Mound Park Hospital (now Bayfront Hospital) located in the city of Saint Petersburg, county of Pinellas, state of Florida. We have contacted the hospital, and they destroy records older than 10 years also.

We have applied to every adoption registry we can find for a possible match, and are on 23andme, FTDNA, Ancestry.com, and have created a Facebook page (thomas.schiferl.7) dedicated to the search for Tom's birth family. The DNA genetic data is a little overwhelming, but thank goodness we have some other 23andme and FTDNA members have rolled up their sleeves and been so helpful and informative. They have helped us determine that; Tom has French Canadian/British/Irish ancestry, and an Italian or Portuguese ancestor ... perhaps great great grandparent or a little further back. His closest 23andme match showing a surname is a 2nd/3rd cousin, 1.07% shared, 6 segments and family surname of Valois. He has a healthy chunk of Native American, and a tiny bit of Ashkenazi Jewish. Also a Venezuela match, on the X chromosome. The maternal haplotype is V1, and often found among Finns and Saami's. On the Paternal side he is a I1*, mostly found in Nordic countries, but also in the north of France which is where a good part of the French founder population came from. 23andme indicated surnames are; Valois, Drisdelle, Michaud, Guest, Mathieu, Gagnon, Cyr, Roy, Pelletier, Dube, Morin,Ouellett/Willet, ++.

The more technical aspects of the FTDNA results are; Paternal haplotype I1-Z140 AS-814 (Z60+, Z140+, Z2538+). We ordered the SNP Z2538 test 5/7/2013. Tom's markers also indicate he is a member of the subclade AS-814. His close surname matches are: BROWN, COLEMAN, CUMMINS, McCRARY/McCREARY, NORDIN and ROBERTSON, all close genetic kin,and slightly more distant: JAMES, MEECHAM, PALLETTE, PRIGMORE, WARREN, many of whom have already tested Z2538+.
Tom's FTDNA kit # is 284194, GEDmatch kit # is M090021.

Thank you so very much for sharing or exchanging genealogical data or family tree names, if you believe you are related to Tom or have information that might be helpful.

We are extremely amazed by, and so very grateful to, the many people who have given so generously of their time and advice on this journey...you have no idea how much your kindness has meant to us.

Christine and Tom Schiferl

US Adopted Sister from Costa Rica
My sister Karen Lorena Esquivel was born on December 14,1976 (1977 maybe). She was adopted before she was a year old in Costa Rica, around 1977-1978. Early investigation indicates she was brought to the US by her parents to Miami. Later on there was speculation she could have been taken to Texas.

The only recent clue we have is we got a call of an American woman in tears a few years back that indicated she had my grandparents information, Claudio Esquivel and Elvira Vargas, and was trying to get information on the family. She got disconnected, her number was private and we couldn't call back.

We've been looking for Karen since the day she was taken. If you have any information please contact me directly.
Im looking for any of my birth family. Im male and was born in El Paso on Aug, 3rd 1974 at Providence hospital. The only information I have is my mother came to live with family in El Paso until I was born and both my birth mother and father were school age. The adoption was pre arranged before I was born between with her doctor, attorney and my adoptive parents attorney. I was taken home by my adoptive parents at 3 days old and never had my birth mother or fathers name. By the time I was 18 the attorney my adoptive parents used no longer had any of those records.

baby girl, born 1961 (probably September) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Trying to help a friend find his older sister (name unknown). Unfortunately he knows little details except that his mother was at a Catholic home for unwed mothers in Milwaukee when his older half-sister was born. Through research, I believe this might have been Misericordia. Birth mother was a college student approximately 18 or 19 at the time. It is believed the birth father was probably the same age.
Happy belated birthday.....your subject header caught my eye because I too was at St. Vincent's (in late '64).

Have you tried to go through the process that Baltimore Catholic Charities has set up for intermediary services? I am in the midst of that process and have found them very helpful (despite what naysayers had told me on various adoption forums).

This person was named Alan Stewart at birth in 1929. I believed they lived in Santa Rosa California and then he was given up for adoption by the parents because the mother was to ill to care for the baby. He was the youngest of 14 children. Birth parents were James Wilbur and Maud Myrtle (Collins) Stewart. He may have been adopted out in San Diego California. Just searching to find out what became of him. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Jana

Nuzzolilli, Tewksbury Adoptions, 1940's

My mother was adopted. Her birth mother was Laura Nuzzolilli who lived in Springfield, Mass and gave birth to my mother in Tewksbury, Mass in 1942. Birth was at Tewksbury State Hospital. Laura Nuzzolilli was 14 at the time. There is no birth father listed. The newborn was named Loretta. There is a record of a Loretta Nuzzolilli living in Springfield with a a birth year at the time Laura would have been born.
Possibly, the teen mother used a different name or named her child after a relative.

Nuzzolilli had a second child, a boy, also put up for adoption. This was within a year or two of the first birth. So it would have been 1942-1945, likely born in Tewksbury State Hospital also. Nothing is known of him.

It's a long shot, but I'm hoping to maybe confirm who Laura/Loretta Nuzzolili is, who the birth father may have been and if the seconf d child, my mothers biological brother, can be located.

Would Appreciate Info on Grandma Adopted by David C Bodine, Joplin, MO 1909

I'm researching the birth family of my grandmother, Nellie Marie Bodine, reportedly born 3 Jan 1909, and left with an adoption agency in Joplin, MO. She was adopted by the David Bodine family, so her name may not have been Nellie Marie at birth. I find that virtually all birth records for Missouri in those years were mysteriously recorded in St. Louis - a practice which makes it really tricky to find someone potentially born in Joplin. Anyone willing to lend a hand, please?

Re: Looking for my moms' birth mother

First, I apoligize if I have contacted you before. I have been searching for my aunt for a year and I have tried to keep contacts organized.
I am looking for my mom's half sister. We have the non identifying information from the state of CA and it mentioned she has a half sister that was born and placed for adoption about "ten" years prior to my mom' birth. My mom was born in 1947. I was wondering if you have received your non identifying information? The information we have is detailed about my mom's birth family, but not a lot about her half sister. If you would like to compare notes, please let me know. Thank you! Lea

Re: "Lost Petty Sister"

Your sister's birth name wasn't Virginia Marie Petty. She was not named and was listed in the birth index as "Petty, Virginia Marie INFANT OF" so she was Baby Girl Petty. Can you write to the court in the county where she was born and ask if they can give you more information on her? I know of others who have searched for a member of their birth family in Texas, and the county opened the file.

"Lost Petty Sister"

I recently received information that I have a sister,
Virginia Marie Petty, (dob. 17 January 1942, Fort Worth, Texas). Our mother, Virginia Marie Petty (dob. 1 December, 1918, Fort Worth, Texas, dod. 14 December, 1983, Chicago, Illinois) placed both of us up for adoption. The Gladney Agency in Fort Worth was somehow involved, however, I was adopted by Virginia's brother, Floyd Eugene Petty and his wife. I have no knowledge of the family that adopted my sister or, her whereabouts at this time. I do have her listed on the Texas Birth Index, 1903 - 1997, 1942 births pg. 1853. Virginia M. Petty was married to Lon Carl Dunham, but I can not find any trace of him. (No B/c, no marriage lic., no divorce decree,no D/C.
She later married Clyde Moore, in El Paso, Texas, 20 September, 1944. Then it all goes "blank".
If this rings any bells for anyone please contact me at
Charlie Petty
colcpetty1944@yahoo.com
Thanking you in advance I remain...
Charlie

It depends a lot on where their birth and adoption took place. If you can post their dates and places of birth, I can give you my opinion. I'm a volunteer search angel. They should join an online adoption search/support group, too.

newbie - how to proceed looking for biological father w. little info?

Any suggestions on next steps to try? I'd hoped the military connection would be my ticket but since that was early 60's I've since learned those records aren't generally online. Am sending a request to Naval archives in St Louis but they seemed doubtful since to get the records you must have that person's signed authorization or if deceased I must be next of kin with SSN or military ID #. Damn.

Here is what I know:

recollection from birth mother Janis Nichols:
"Bob Gurley (not sure if we can assume Robert or not and not positive of spelling of last name), Navy, communications (radio operator in Administration bldg), Naval Air Station Quonset Point, RI (decomm'd in 1974, was going to re-up for 5 years. Bob had a real good friend he hung around with..in the Navy.also in Communications..his name was Rummel..they called him Rum."

from adoption agency records in 1961: Age 23 (on birthmother's adoption agency admittance 05-12-1962, implies birth in 1939) Irish/German, blond hair blue eyes, fair complexion, 5'6" 158 lbs, high school education, interests: radiok, electronics.
