Looking for Army SERVICE NUMBER for John Thompson

Surnames: Thompson
My grandfather (John Thompson, 1923-2006) from York, England was a Private in the British Army during WWII with tours in Italy and North Africa. His vehicle was blown up in Italy and he was wounded and the sole survivor. Some years later, his house caught fire and all of the family pictures and service records were burned up. I have no idea how to go about finding his service number due to my lack of information. I don't have any specific information, other than his name, date of birth, and location. Any help is MUCH appreciated! Thank you!

Absolute total longshot, but I can't think of any other way that you might achieve that.

Many ex servicemen from the WW2 era would have been members of the Royal British Legion, and the secretary of his local branch might have a membership record which might include his military details.

The only other possibility is if he married or had children whilst he was in service, servicemen sometimes included their service details on marriage and birth certificates.

He got married after he was discharged from the service. I will try the link and see if I can find anything. Thank you!
