My father married a girl in Australia during WWII. Once married, did she automatically become a U.S. citizen? Or did she have to file papers? THANKS, John Bond

Hi,
Do you have the marriage certificate?, if so what does it say ?
If not are you happy to put forward the names of your parents?

No she didn't, the U.S.A. enacted the War Brides Act in December 1945 which enabled the non asian spouses and children of U.S. service personnel to enter America, but it didn't confer citizenship on them, if they wanted to become U.S. citizens they would have had to apply for that after they arrived in America.

Which is why, if you find an arrival record for her for when she first arrived in America, ( if indeed she did go to America ), you'll probably find that she is listed on an immigration service list and that she is listed as an Australian citizen, ( or as British or whatever nationality she was when she married ).

Thank you for the reply. I read the War Brides Act, but I thought it said when she married my father - she became automatic a US citizen. I know what ship she came on and just ordered her passenger list from Australia National Archives. She sailed into San Francisco. THANKS so much for the information. Now I will have to find her passenger arrival record in San Francisco. Johnny Bond
