Hello. I am one of two researchers assisting the WingsAcrossAmerica group trying to locate information on a few WASP pilots unaccounted for since 1944. Your grandmother, Helen Louise Hall Brown is one of them, if that is grandma's name. It may not be, since our missing WASP enlisted in 1944, and was in class 44-W-6. Any info appreciated. thank you.
Hi all,
I am part of a local history group that is researching our local cemetery, our only female armed forces casualty is aircraftswoman 1st class Joyce Sanchez Field, service number 2132671, who died 21/07/1943 and is buried in Gravesend cemetery, Kent. She was based at RAF Gravesend when she died but I do not know for how long. I have been unable to find very much about her other than what is on the CWGC site and a newspaper report about her death. Would anyone have any further information about her life? I have seen copies of her birth and death certificate, but would be really grateful if anyone could tell me her likely duties during her time with the WAAF.
Many thanks for any help you can offer,
James Stevens
My Grandmother was in the WAAC in WWII. Have you checked to see if she has had military burial? Also check any and all WAAC websites and the VFW. They might be able to help locate Lucille. I'll look through my grandmother's military records, she kept everything! Keep in touch.

What happened to the women in the Army Corps during WWII? I have learned nothing of them in school and I was wondering about the Women's Air Forces as well. Did they ever fight in Europe or the Pacific Fronts? I find it curious that they had the branches in the army and airforce, and yet were never given credit for what they had done. I have been researching for a project in High School (due next week to be exact) on the U.S Airforce in Europe during WWII and when looking through my uncle's and grandfather's old pictures, had found Penny. My uncle is long since dead, had been in the Army and so I could not ask him, however I have been able to get alot on the Men's Airforce out of my grandfather. The women, I know nothing about and so I have grow a curiosity and hope to learn more about how they had worked in their service, not just for the project.

The women of the WAC's and WAAC's served everywhere men did except in front line combat. They accompanied the military untis to the Pacific and through France into Germany. There were also U.S. Navy WAVES, Coast Guard SPARS, the Army Nurse Corps, Navy and Army Air Force Flight Surgeons and Flight Nurses, Marine Corps Womens Reserve,Womens Air Service Pilots, and the traditional USO and Red Cross women. The total number of women who served in WW2 was in the hundreds of thousands. I don't think they ever received the full thanks they deserved for all they did. A favorite of mine were the Womens Air Service Pilots, the first female pilots in the US Military. After the war most of the female volunteers left the service leaving just the usual small number of women in traditional office and medical professions. Woemn would have to wait until 1976 to be allowed to attend the various U.S. Military Academy schools of the services. If you want to find out more heres a couple of good sites-

www.blitzkriegbaby.de - gives a lot of information on history, uniforms, training, ranks and photos for all the womens services in WW 2

wikipedia- type " women in world war II " into the search box and you'll have a large amount of material to study

Hope this helps with finding out more information, I started myself because my aunt was a Navy nurse in the Pacific in WW2 and my mother was in the Air Force with my father. Hearing thier stories as opposed to all the men in the family made me want to learn more about thier experiences. Good luck!

meghan

Its a Womens Army Corp ( WAC ) for an enlisted women. It appears she has the ribbon to the WAC Service Medal on her blouse. There are some type of regimental insignia on her lower lapels (the shield shapes) which if there was a clear picture could help identify the unit she was attached to. If your gf was in the Army Air Corp he could have very easily met this person at Chanute Field while training. The picture itself seems to be from a photographer in Pennsylvania according to the address. I would check to see if he was at Chanute, then research the units at the field at this time to find a match for her collar insignia. Then you can narrow down the person. Hope this helps!

Meghan

My grandfather said her uniform is most likely the Army. Her name is Penny and she is from Chanute(?), Ill. and the date is 1943 Christmas. I don't know anything farther than this. I want to know if anyone knows of her and if they could possibly tell me the connection between her and my great-uncle George Bloom of DuBois, PA. He was stationed in France and Germany and He was trained in Florida. I know he was wounded, but other than that I know nothing more and I know nothing of her significance as to why he kept her picture, because he never married.

It is my typo, it should be "Nativity".
I don't know about the "Civil Occupations" but I am a Navy brat and the military uses numbers for job classificalions and it could be on the orginal record had such a "number" and Ancestry just listed the occupations that closley matched the number.
Use Google search for more on the WAAC/WAC information you want. This is a link I found to answer you questions about basic training:

http://www.nps.gov/archive/fowa/waac.htm

"When Congress authorized the WAAC,...An abandoned stable at Fort Des Moines, Iowa was the first women's training center. It opened on July 20, 1942 with 440 women in the six-week Officer Candidate School, and 125 enlisted women taking a four-week basic training course. Later, additional women's training facilities were established at Daytona Beach, Florida; Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia; Fort Devens, Massachusetts; and Camp Ruston, Louisiana..."

The NARA website has information about using other sources to compile military service.
I don't understand "Navitity" City and State. Is "Navitity" a typo for the word Nativity meaning the city where Lillian was born? I'm fairly new to the geneology terms and phrases. Lillian's birth cert. says she was born in Duluth,MN which is in St. Louis County. But, there is a suburb of Minneapolis called St. Louis Park. Do you know what tire rebuilders and/or diver's helper, Marine did? Why is this listed as civil occ? Is there a way to find out what unit she was with or where she did her basic training? Also, are there other web sites or vet sites to help recreate the burned out St. Louis, MO Oficial Militry Records?

You can go to the National Archives site @ www.archives.gov and search for her in the military records. You can get some basic info as to where she enlisted and her id number etc. Then you can request copies of her records (the info on how to do that is on the site too). Good luck with your search!

Ann Jill Tarkowski

We knew she had left Wisconsin and been in the Military but no one knew when or where or what she did. We had no idea she was ever in New Mexico! I have looked up some general information about both Los Alamos, Women's Army Corp and Manhattan District but none of this information gives me specific info about her or her duites, when she was in and out. Can anyone give me more help?
Laurie

She served from July 15, 1944 until her honorabe discharge on October 19, 1945 as a Prvate First Class. Her records were destroyed by the fire at the National Personnel Records Center in MO. She lived in Duluth, MN at the time she entered military sevice. I think she served someplace in Florida and upon discharge retured to MN.

Mary Dedman Bowen

I am searching for any information on Mary Dedman Bowen originally from Lexington, KY or Paris, KY who would haved served with the WAAC, 6th Company 4th Regiment, possibly out of Mississippi or Alabama. Have picture of Mrs. Bowen dated Feb. 10, 1943 at Daytona Beach with her unit. Mrs. Bowen passed away in 1992 and received military rites and her grave is marked with a Military Marker. Her daughter submitted her records at time of death and these have been lost. She is now trying to find out about her mothers' military service but the VA says there is no record. We would appreciate any help or information that anyone could supply.

Thank you,

Leila Atwood & Sharon Leach

1942- 1946

Unsure of the actual start date...But my Grandmother did her basic at Ft. Dix, NJ and then was off to Ft. Bragg where she met my Grandfather.
Her name was Corinne (Corky) Davis. I am hoping that someone has pictures of my Grandmother from when she was in uniform. Our family has none. My Grandmother passed away 5 years ago. But I am still trying to memorialize her as she deserves to be. Her time in service was a point of pride for her and it started a tradition in her grand-daughters that several of us have served (the boys can't say the same!)
If anyone has any info I would REALLY appreciate it.
Thank You,
Jennifer

Alice Maud Hartley

I'm afraid that the few details I have are sketchy at best!
She joined the Army around 1938, but I have no idea where Alice was based.
I am assuming that she left due to having her oldest son in 1944. We know he and his youngest brother were fathered by a man named William Saer, who was also in the Army, but I cannot find him anywhere!
There is also no record of a marriage between Alice and William. Or birth certs for their sons.

LUCILLE KISER (KIZER)

I am told that Lucille KISER or KIZER served in the WAACs during World War II (born approx 1912 in Arkansas). She was the daughter of my 2G-Aunt, ANNA KISER (HUFFMAN). Her father JAMES KISER took the children (Alva, Susan, Amelia, James, and Lucille) to South Carolina after her mother died in 1912 - they were orginally from the area. Later they moved to North Carolina. He father remarried and had a child, Myrtle - whos mother died in childbirth. He remarried again to Myrtles aunt (his sister-in-law) and had 5 more children. Lucille did not have a good childhood and I'm told she ran away when she was about 15. I found her living in a boarding house in Gastonia in 1930, she was working in a local mill under Lucille A. Kiser.

Family from her fathers third marriage told me that the story is that Lucille joined the WAACs and that she even returned to her father or your brothers funeral (can't recall which - but in the 50's) wearing her uniform - she was a high ranking officer. she had a friend with her - but noone recalls her name. that was the last time anyone from that side of the family heard or saw from her.

It would be great to know what happened to Lucille. If you have any information please post it here or email me directly. Thank You - Cheryl
