POW records damaged in the 1973 MO fire

Hi all,
I've been looking for information on my grandfather. He was a POW during WWII. I know he was a POW, I've seen a news paper article that was clipped but that article from some unknown paper has gone missing (unfortunate surprise). I have been looking for my grand fathers POW records since I was able to get into records to do ancestry and do searches on him. He was either a POW in Germany or Japan, though I am not sure which one...and I am not sure when he got out. Sadly his name is common (Frank Smith). At the time he should have been from Connecticut I believe. I've checked everywhere, does any one know of any foreign records of prisoners? This has to be documented somewhere if I have seen the article and know it has existed before. It makes me want to bang my head against a wall in frustration!

POW Location: Japan or Germany
Living in: Connecticut I believe at the time
Name: Frank Smith
Originally was pronounced dead at one time but was found at a hospital by his brother later on

Have you access to your grandfather's Discharge Documents (WD AGO Form 53-55)? If so, that would be the document to begin your quest for FACTS about your grandfather's role in WW 2. Your grandfather was provided with 6-10 copies of his four page Discharge Documents (WD AGO Form 53-55) when he was discharged from the US Army. Where are those 6-10 copies?
Some R.A.M.P.s (ex-POWs) were interviewed just after liberation. Those interviews are on file at the National Archives. Good Luck with your quest.
