I would like to find out any info on him and this camp. My Dad never said much about his experiences there. Debbie pieone@hotmail.com

Never heard from you. Did you get to go on your trip? I sent off to get info from my Dad's military files. They said they were burned in a fire. They did send back an application he had sent in for a POW award. He had to write something of his experiences. It was just one parragraph. He said several guys were put in a train boxcar. Little clothing. They were beaten.
My Father never talked about that time. He did say that they were marched out naked each day and were made to stand around a large pit. They were randomly shot and the rest went back to the barracks.
Has anyone else contacted you about Stalag 7A? I would love to find more people and stories. Debbie

Debbie,

I just came across your message about Stalag 7A. My father was a prisoner there from Dec 1944 until they were liberated in May 1945. Like your dad, my dad never talked about his experiences in the war. He did tell my mother about what happened when he first came home. She said he talked non-stop for six months and then rarely talked about it again.

There are a couple of websites that have a great deal of information. One is http://www.moosburg.org/info/stalag/indeng.html

The other is
http://www.b24.net/pow/stalag7.htm

There are also several personal histories on the web. Google Stalag 7 Moosburg and you will find them.

Surnames: Counts
William Henry Counts Sr. 1920-1996

Buried: Mt Holly Cemetery Little Rock, Arkansas
Was a pilot during WWII of a B24 called the 'Bird Dog'. and he was shot down in flames over Germany June 26, 1944. He got his crew out of the plane, but all others were either killed by the Germans or died of their injuries or in the camps. He was captured and spent the remainer of the war with Germany in a POW camp (Stalag 7A Moosburg Bavaria 48-12 (Work Camps 3324-46 Krumbachstrasse 48011, Work Camp 3368 Munich 48-11). He was a member of the 'Catepiller club' indicating he was shot down during wartime, his catepillar had red eyes indicating the plane went down in flames. I saw the card. After the POW camp was liberated, he went on with the ground troops to liberate one of the large concentration camps. He would never say more than that about it.
There is a picture of he and his crew in my public tree. Counts is standing at far left. One crewman (Hansbury)missed the flight that day due to sudden illness. He was known to be part of the crew by the Germans. Uncle Bill never told them & the Germans thought Hansbury had escaped. Spies in England had told the Germans about the mission & everyone that was in the crew that day.

If anyone has any information or knew him, I would like to hear. Thank you

My uncle, Robert W Ross was a B-24 Bombardier who was shot down around the same time and was in all the same camps. I lost uncle Bob in the mid-1990's and don't have his squadron or aircraft number. I am trying to get more info. from his adopted son. Do you have the crew names for William Counts aircraft?

My father was also in Stalag 7A, and listed exactly as you have:

Stalag 7A Moosburg Bavaria 48-12 (Work Camps 3324-46 Krumbachstrasse 48011, Work Camp 3368 Munich 48-11)

Do you know the meaning of all the other names and numbers?

My father was Fred L. Schilling, although he was known as Bob. He was with the 504th PIR, Company G, and was captured in Sept 1944, remaining a prisoner until the Liberation of the camp in April 1945.

No I do not know what all the numbers represent. My Uncle never talked about his war experiences much. Several years ago my brother gathered quite a bit of information and gave it to his wife Gloria Miller Counts. She is in her 80's and remembers little. My brother and I are estranged and he would not let me have any information if I asked. I'll keep looking and share anything I can find. Thank you for your response. Caroline Burton, Fayetteville, Arkansas. Please keep in touch.

Sorry I didn't see your note sooner. I have a picture posted on the Burton-Kanakis-Miller public tree for my uncle Bill & his crew. It has the names listed, I believe. His plane was called the 'Birddog' and he was the pilot and lone survivor (except for the crewman that became sick and didn't make the flight). His name was William Henry Counts, Sr. His wife, Gloria, is still alive but in her 80s and not in good health. His son Bill Counts, Jr may have some more information. I will ask
