Dear Natalie
Sgt Raymond Smith was my father. Unfortunately he passed away in 1992. Stalag 4A wasn't liberated by any external force. The camp commandant surrendered to my Dad on the 8th May. You always learn something new, I wasn't aware a questionnaire existed in the National Archives, I'll have to check it out.

Hello Witold,

thank you very much for photos you've uploaded! I found on them my Grandfather - Mieczysław Knebloch - they called him in Hohnstein "The King". On photos he is the one with the longest beard.

I knew, from my Grandfather's notes, that his friends were i.a.: Mr Bachurski, Mr Mucha and Mr Utracki. They're also on your photos.

I was wondering where do you have this pictures from, because I've got some of them too (picture with my Grandfather on the throne for example). Is there someone from your family on those photos? Maybe I will have some informations in Grandpa's photos and diaries.

Thank you again! It was really surprise to find my Grandfather in your photos which are in such great quality.

Best!
Kama

Kama,

I have these pictures from second husband of my grandmother;
Piotr Gąsior named "Piecia" is on left side of this picture

and on many other (distinctive hairstyle) :)

I am very glad that I could share it :)
It will be nice, if you find some additional informations in diaries.
If you want, I can try to scan them in better resolution and send you.

Best regards
Witold from Wrocław

Witold,

again a big surpise, because I never thought to receive a replay that soon :)

I immediately called my grandmother and she told me that she knew your Piotr Gąsior from photos and other grandpa memories. They're also together on some pictures that she have.

I'm waiting now to receive more photos (all of them has notes at the back) from my grandma. I wil look for more pictures with a man with distinctive hairstyle :)

Thank you
Best!

The POWs in the small satellite camps of Stalag IVA (for instance of Stalag IVA, ARB-KDO, 1325) were marched out of the camp early one frosty morning in March. Their column joined those coming from all the other satellite camps of IVA around Dresden. They were marched south towards Czechoslovakia. My father escaped from the march as it drew near to the Czech border so I have no knowledge of what happened after that except that other POWs from further east were marched into the empty camps and were still there in April.
