WOW ! we have been going through so much lately - my dad - Joe - is as tough as nails and just will never give up - he can't stand real well now and he goes in and out mentally - two years ago he was fixing mechanical watches then an infection caused all these problems - Squad leader that's my dad - if you could send me a picture of your dad in the Corps I will try and get my daughter to scan my dad's picture and send to show your dad

My dad hadn't let on to his excitement after telling him about your dad. Then last weekend I had mentioned the news you gave of the latest difficulties your dad's going thru, and his move to a care facility. Was a moment there, briefly I could see like the wind fall out from dad's sail. Then Dad said, "You know, I really like Joe."(your dad) going on dad says, "He's a NICE guy, I tell you. And I remember, I looked up to Joe. He was a good squad leader, and always fair, with everyone."

Dad's genuine

eldeaviles,

Yes! I did indeed see your reply. I hope we can continue chatting at least for awhile. I've learned a ton about some of their day to day jungle life. Do you have your dad's copy of the letter documenting their Presidential Unit Citation Award?

Actually! I think we may get a kick out of learning more about our fathers and their parental influences on us growing up i.e. similar home life, feeling about life. Of course, some feel by nature we are all networked together in some way. twilight zone music playing... You?

Finally- do either you or your dad object to me sharing this Company Roster copy. I am not sure that it's an official military document so much as Company 'C' trying to keep in touch with each other. I feel pretty sure that this reflects accurate information. And could be its official.
Hi, my dad - Joe Alvarez - was originally from Kansas but he grew up in Pennsylvania - Donora - he was a friend of Stan Musial the baseball player. He was just put in a managed care home. He left the Marines as a Staff Sargent at Vallejo CA and went to the Western Pennsylvania School of Horology after the war and became a watchmaker and jeweler in Charleroi Pa. He moved to Long Beach CA in 1961 and worked for the Navy as an instrument mechanic and became a Supervisor - he banked his marine time with his Navy time and retired in 1980. In retirement he fixed mechanical watches till he was almost 90. It is hard to communicate with him as his memory slips in and out - I'm sure of one thing HE LOVED THE MARINE CORP !!!

You can get a copy of his complete military record at the NARA ...Form 180...www.archives.gov

Ancestry.com also has "WWII US Navy Muster Rolls" and shows his last time on the Medusa was the quarter ending March 30, 1940. He then was on the ship Vestal and a quarter on the Yorktown. He was at the US Naval Air Station San Diego, quarter ending Sept 30 1941 and still there quarter ending December 31, 1941. Service Number to order records:341 43 97
enlisted Dec 18, 1936.

Get a subscription to Ancestry and you can download and print out records. Or look at Fold3, they have Military databases.

Millard Rowden was born 14 September 1893. He enlisted with the Marine Corps in 1917. He became a machinist and eventually was assigned to the USS "Medusa". The "Medusa" was at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 near the seaplane tender, "Curtiss". I would like to know if Millard Rowden was on board or in the Harbor area during the attack. Millard Rowden passed away 18 May 1970 in San Diego, CA. Any info on Rowden would be appreciated. Thanks Brian

Have you sent away for his service records? That would provide you with some definite information on his service.

http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/

National Personnel Records Center
Military Personnel Records, 9700 Page
Avenue, St. Louis, MO

Ask for a copy of everything in your veteran's personnel records ("jackets"). Also ask for the "MED" records. (You must have a serial number and ask for "MED" records specifically, as they are only filed under the serial number and not by name).

On the SF180 or in your letter, you may write (or attach a note): "I am the next of kin. I want these records for information for our family. I would like a copy of all documents in my father's personnel records file. If his records were burned or are missing, I would like to have his personnel file reconstructed. If the record is reconstructed, I would like a copy of all documents used to reconstruct his file and prove his service. The copies of the records I am requesting should include, but should not be limited to the following: Official Military Personnel File, Final Pay Voucher, Medical Records and Clinical Records to include the SGO Tape, Flight Records (for Army Air Corps Personnel only) and Certificate of Service."

See if your library has Ancestry or try the FamilySearch.org for what is online. He filed a WWI Draft Registration Card June 5th 1917 in Jackson Co MO he was a St RY motorman for Kansas City Rys Co. Said he was born in Springfield, MO. And is exempt because he was under a $2500.00 Bond to answer charge of perjury to the State of MO.

He is listed as Miller Rowden in 1900 census Springfield Ward 7, Greene County, MO in parents household with a little brother Lewis R. .
1910 the Rowden family is listed as Roden in Greene Co MO and it looks like there were only the 2 sons still living, Miller and Louis R.
In 1930 census he is listed as Milliard Rowden and is in the Coco Solo Air Station, Cristobal Dist, Panama Canal Zone

The State of Missouri has an online Soldier's Records for WWI and Millard Rowden is listed as Army/Marine.
http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/soldiers/#soldsearch

They also have images of Death Certificates 1910-1961 and it looks like the brother Lewis R in 1900 census died 1932, was single so no descendants there. DC also names parents, who also have dcs, Sat and Alma Rowden all died in Greene County.
http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/#...

For a obit you might try the San Diego County Library reference desk.
Millard Rowden was a career Navy/Marine Corp man.He was born 14 September 1893. He enlisted during WW1. I do not know when he retired. He passed away at San Diego on 15 May 1970. He served aboard the USS Medusa. He may have been on board on 7December 1941 at Pearl Harbor. I would like to find his obituary or at least some biographical article on him. Did he have any children? Are any of his relatives still around? If someone could help me find the obituary, please contact me. thanks Brian

I am trying to find any & ALL info about Cecil Dale Rogers who entered the USMC on 15 Dec 1945 and separated on 27 Oct 1947. Would like to find out what Battalion he was in & follow his path chronologically so his grandson can come to know about when he was a young man. He was born in Marlow, Oklahoma on 20 JUL 1926 and his serial# 579066. From his DD 214 it only says he was a truck driver, hvy. 245 (this may be his MOS). From a picture his patch shows he was in a service supply battalion & from an embossed photo stamp he was in Tien Stin, China. Want to learn lots more!!!

This is a U.S. Marine Regiment stationed in Samoa, from a website about them:
http://www.ranger95.com/marines/regiments/3rd_rgt/3rd_marine...

"The 3rd Marine Regiment is an infantry regiment of the United States Marine Corps based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. They fall under the 3rd Marine Division and the III Marine Expeditionary Force.
The regiment comprises three infantry battalions and one headquarters company. Also, because of the geographic isolation, an artillery battalion (1/12) also falls under the regiment:
1st Battalion 3rd Marines
2nd Battalion 3rd Marines
3rd Battalion 3rd Marines
1st Battalion 12th Marines
(the website has underlined links with information on each)
History
World War II

The 3rd Marine Regiment was reactivated on June 16, 1942, at New River, North Carolina, as part of the World War II military expansion. They deployed to American Samoa on September 14, 1942 and were attached to the 2nd Marine Brigade. The regiment redeployed to New Zealand on May 23, 1943 and were reassigned to the 3rd Marine Division at that time. The regiment fought at Bougainville and Guam. Four Medals of Honor were awarded to members of 3rd Marines for actions during this period.

Following World War II, the regiment was ordered to China to aid in the disarming of Japanese units and to assist the Nationalist government in the occupation of Northern China in an effort to deny land to the communists..."

Try an internet search for reunion sites or Veterans sites about this unit.
