Hi Carolyn,

My father served with 1st AEB, later changed to, 1st SEB and he was in Auckland, NZ on R&R during the same period you mentioned. He doesn't remember the name you mentioned. (He knows Joe Alvarez he said.) And he does still have a company roster and said he would bring it over to me when he comes this Sat. If seeing a copy might be helpful to you, let me know.

Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your offer. I would love to see that roster. Also, thank your father very much for taking the time to find it.

Carolyn

Hi, my dad - Joe Alvarez - was originally from Kansas but he grew up in Pennsylvania - Donora - he was a friend of Stan Musial the baseball player. He was just put in a managed care home. He left the Marines as a Staff Sargent at Vallejo CA and went to the Western Pennsylvania School of Horology after the war and became a watchmaker and jeweler in Charleroi Pa. He moved to Long Beach CA in 1961 and worked for the Navy as an instrument mechanic and became a Supervisor - he banked his marine time with his Navy time and retired in 1980. In retirement he fixed mechanical watches till he was almost 90. It is hard to communicate with him as his memory slips in and out - I'm sure of one thing HE LOVED THE MARINE CORP !!!

eldeaviles,

Yes! I did indeed see your reply. I hope we can continue chatting at least for awhile. I've learned a ton about some of their day to day jungle life. Do you have your dad's copy of the letter documenting their Presidential Unit Citation Award?

Actually! I think we may get a kick out of learning more about our fathers and their parental influences on us growing up i.e. similar home life, feeling about life. Of course, some feel by nature we are all networked together in some way. twilight zone music playing... You?

Finally- do either you or your dad object to me sharing this Company Roster copy. I am not sure that it's an official military document so much as Company 'C' trying to keep in touch with each other. I feel pretty sure that this reflects accurate information. And could be its official.

My dad hadn't let on to his excitement after telling him about your dad. Then last weekend I had mentioned the news you gave of the latest difficulties your dad's going thru, and his move to a care facility. Was a moment there, briefly I could see like the wind fall out from dad's sail. Then Dad said, "You know, I really like Joe."(your dad) going on dad says, "He's a NICE guy, I tell you. And I remember, I looked up to Joe. He was a good squad leader, and always fair, with everyone."

Dad's genuine

WOW ! we have been going through so much lately - my dad - Joe - is as tough as nails and just will never give up - he can't stand real well now and he goes in and out mentally - two years ago he was fixing mechanical watches then an infection caused all these problems - Squad leader that's my dad - if you could send me a picture of your dad in the Corps I will try and get my daughter to scan my dad's picture and send to show your dad
