CHILLICOTHE: Ella M. Spencer, 96, of Chillicothe, Ohio died 8:30 a.m. Friday, July 10, 2015 at her residence following an extended illness.

She was born February 10, 1919, in Talihina, Oklahoma to the late Myles Sr. and Vella Lemley Kirkland.

Ella was a 1936 graduate of Beallsville High School and in 1942 from the Gallengen School of Nursing in Washington, D.C.
Upon graduating from nursing school, she was drafted as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Force.
Her journey as a nurse soon led to Seaton Hospital in Austin, Texas; Breckenridge Hospital in Austin, TX, nursing supervisor at Galveston County Memorial, Galveston, TX, supervisor at Veterans Affairs Hospital in Austin, TX, supervisor at Veterans Affairs Hospital in Dayton, Ohio and supervisor at Chillicothe Veterans Affairs Medical Center where she retired in 1982.

Ella was a former Ross County, Ohio Nurses Association Nurse of the Year.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church since she was 13 years old and was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Chillicothe.
Ella volunteered for many years serving the Red Cross.
She was a world traveler having visited many places including, Europe, Australia, South Pacific, South America and Alaska.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Robert M. and Sue (Flesher) Spencer; grandchildren, Thad W. (Heather) Spencer and Erin L. (Kelly) Spencer, all of Chillicothe; great grandchildren, Rylee Paige, Megan Elaine, Josie Anne, Skylar and Leevi Kirkland; and several nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Blanche Hancock and a brother, Myles Kirkland, Jr.


A funeral service will be held 7 p.m. Monday, July 13, 2015 in the WARE FUNERAL HOME with Rev. Dr. Jason Link officiating. Friends may call at the WARE FUNERAL HOME from 5 to 7 p.m. prior to the service on Monday.
Burial will be held in Beallsville Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Adena Hospice 2077 Western Avenue Chillicothe, Ohio 45601 or to the Ross County Humane Society 2308A Lick Run Road Chillicothe, Ohio 45601.
