KY National Guard: Troop I, 123rd Calvary - WWII
My father Charles Neikirk was a member of the KY National Guard, Troop I, 123rd Calvary from 1938 to 1940 when he enlisted in the US Army. When enlisted, he was assigned to the 103rd AAA Automatic Weapons Battalion of the KY National Guard. He did his basic training at Camp Hulen, Palacios TX then was shipped to the British Isles in April 1942. I have discovered a book was written about the 103rd called "Dog" Battery, 103rd AAA (AW) Battalion, It's Hidden History in World War II, February 1941 to September 1945 by Harold Dwight Tipton. The book was published in 1998. If anyone has any information on the 103rd from KY, or knows the whereabouts of a copy of the book, please contact me. Thank you so much.

I found an advertisement offering the book for sale, don't know how old the ad is. Contact info was Harold D Tipton, 14050 Simmons Lake Road, Brooksville, Fl 34601, phone 352-799-6327. Price was $25 plus $3 shipping and handling. Good luck. Don

Thanks for your response. I, also, found the same advertisement, but the phone number has been disconnected. I am writing a letter to the address listed in the hopes of getting some information. With the vast use of cell phones, the other number may have been a landline and disconnected because of the convenience of cell phones. It pays to be optimistic in geneaolgy research.
Thanks again.

Patti. That might be in vain. I ran a search on white pages and think that Harold D Tipton died at the age of 91 in 2005. There is another of the same name somewhere between 50 to 55, possibly his son. His address is 13091 Old Crystal River Road, Brooksville, Florida, 34601-4622. No phone listed. Don

Thanks for the information, Don. I did not find that the elder Mr Tipton had passed away. I will try contacting the other Harold Tipton. I would be nice to have a copy of the book.

Sure! I mailed the letter yesterday, so I'm hoping for a quick response. What are you researching?

Re: KY National Guard: Troop I, 123rd Calvary - WWII
Actually I am not researching anything. I have gone about as far as I can go with my own family. Most of the info I found was given to me by others. This is my way of paying back so I spend a couple of hous everyday trying to help others.

I, for one, appreciate the help. Having limited time to research, it is always nice to have some help now and again. I will keep you posted on what I find out. Thanks again!

Re: KY National Guard: Troop I, 123rd Calvary - WWII
I wrote to Harold Tipton at the second address you sent me, and on Saturday I received a copy of the book I was searching for. This Harold Tipton is indeed the son of the author of "Dog" Battery, It's Hidden History. Unfortunately, from what I have read in the first few pages, I now don't think the original information I was given about my father was correct. The "Dog" Battery was made up of men from Troop E of the 123rd Calvary of the KY National Guard. My father was in Troop I. But the book does give a good account of the 123rd up to induction into the US Army, and some of the sources used by the author should be helpful in researching the 106th AAA (AW)Battalion which what Troop I and others became at induction into the Army. Thanks for your encouragement.
