John Henry Swan (WW2 Merchant Navy) - Looking for service number

Hello,

In WW2 my Grandfather, John Henry Swan (known as Henry Swan), served with the Merchant Navy. I know he was on convoys between the US and the UK, as well as several other routes.

I would like to obtain more information about his service. As he has passed away, I am unable to ask him, not that he would talk about it any ways.

I don't know his service number, to even start searching for information.

Can anyone please advise how I might be able to get hold of his service number? So I can then search for his service records.

Thank you!!

Wenedy

Since you say US to UK then was he in the U.S. Merchant Service? This is a very comprehensive website on how and where to do research. He may not have had a "service number" as the Military had them. It was only in the 1980s they received WWII Military Service Credit. He may be listed on passengers/crew lists of the time before and after, if not during the war. the name "marines" and "Navy" do not necessarily the US Marines or US Navy, there where US Army Armed Guards put on ships for protection.

My Grandfather was British and served with the British Merchant Marines. I believe that he may also have served with the British Navy but this is unconfirmed.

Thank you!
