My Father's name is Roger Perry...Armed Guard on the John A. Poor and one of the lucky ones to survive. He passed away in 1979 but my Mom is 93 and remembers so much from that time. I would love to contact someone whose relative also survived. It would be so kind to hear from someone! I will wait anxiously.

My name is Margo (nee Perry) French and I live in Fairfax VA but I am originally from Milwaukee Wisconsin where most of my family still lives.

Margo, just read about your dad. From what I have read of some accounts, it was horrible. My dad apparently was on a merchant ship that sunk in 1942 we think because it was before he married. My grandmother rec'd the notice. But we haven't been able to identify the ship just yet or find a list of survivors from ships that went down except for a few. Some of his records were lost. He really didn't share the story until his later years and didn't give many details. He told my siblings a little about being in the life raft. Am trying now to run down a few leads. We think it was on the Murmansk run. If anyone has any ideas, we would appreciate the help. Linda

It could have been sunk by either a German surface warship, probably a capital ship, but that's fairly unlikely.

It's more likely that it would have been a German aircraft, and even more likely that it would have been a German submarine.

If it was a submarine, the relevant ship is likely be listed here...

Thank you so much for your reply. Have reviewed the uboat site prior but did not find anything as yet. Am hoping to locate an old picture taken on a ship on that Run to see the date and possibly a ship's name. Again, thanks!
