I am trying to find a death record for someone that enlisted in the army in 1941 and thereafter I cannot find him. No Social Security record, no death record that I can find in the state - IL - he was living in at time of enlistment, no grave. And since he was born in 1911, I am pretty sure he is long deceased. Name: Virgil J Malone. Do not know his unit. Ideas?

Was his death while in the Army, or after he was discharged from the Army?

I have no idea. Can't find him anywhere, I just thought that maybe ha had died in the War, and didn't know where to research that.

Since you are unsure whether or not Mr. Malone was KIA or DOW during WW 2, I suggest you attempt to obtain his IDPF (Individual Deceased Personnel File). Send your letter-of-request to:

Department of the Army
US Army Human Resources Command
ATTN: AHRC-FOIA
1600 Spearhead Division Avenue Dept 107
Fort Knox KY 40122-5504

Good Luck with your quest.

This looks to be his enlistment record at the NARA, it has his Army Service Number and you should help in identifying his IDPF if there is one. Also be able to order a copy of his service record if you ever find a death certificate to submit.

He may have began to use his middle name. Having an exact birth date would also help.
Or he starting using his Step-fathers last name Hildebrand.
