Thomas Hinton 811740 Private ROAC 1943

These are the details entered as father on my mum's birth certificate, but we can't find anyone with that service number, all we know is that he must have been in North Yorkshire (in the Catterick area) around June/July 1942.
I've tried to research the number but it seems to be missing a digit for British Forces, and other allied forces don't seem to have an ROAC connection? I did wonder whether the registrar wrote the number down incorrectly. I'm stuck and would appreciate some guidance if anyone can help please?
Thanks
Alison

If you look at the history of the ROAC you will find that between 1942 and 1943 it was reorganized with the REME. The REME took over some functions of the ROAC and the ROAC took over some functions if the REME. They may have transferred personnel. So Thomas might have been with the REME in 1942, but when BC filed he was in the ROAC or visa versa. I have Ancestry, but US only, I see some results but no details from World. There is a database "UK, Army Roll of Honour 1939-1945" all I see is name Thomas Hinton and date of death I only see year 1942. If the full death date is after July 1942 this could be him unless you know he survived the war or was alive after 1942.

Some search engines can use a wildcard so search *811740 or 811740* or 8*11740, 81*1740 etc.

Thanks for your reply, it got really confusing when I was searching because on the birth certificate he was listed as ROAC, but all my searches brought up RAOC and nothing on the number. This piece of information and the other reply I have received will set me back on the path of discovery so thank you again for the time you took to help with my search.

Is the Thomas Hinton Private ROAC 1943 somehow related to Thomas Hinton (b. 1819) of Staffordshire?
