My great uncle was shot down over Misburg Germany on the 26 Nov 1944. He was part of the 491st bomb group, 853rd squaderon, plane #212. His body was returned home in 1949. Can anyone help me find where he was laid to rest for the 4 yrs before being returned to his home in Maine?

Thank you

You can send for his Individual Deceased Personnel File. You can google this and it will tell you how. The file will give you the information. Some of the contents may be bad so be prepared.

He was most likely buried close to where his plane had crashed, a local german cemetery would be my guess. He was in aircraft 212-I of the 853rd, a B-24 Liberator with the serial number 44-40212. The aircraft commander was a Lt. Robert E. Cloughley. The Missing Aircrew Report (MACR) is 11158. The report is available on Footnote for a fee. The aircraft is listed as being unnamed, but here is a site that list's it as being called "The Easy Way"-

http://www.b24bestweb.com/easyway.htm

Here's a couple of websites with info on the group and mission-

http://www.491st.org/491hist4.html

http://www.airwarweb.net/usaaf/8th-air-force_491st_bomb_grou...

Another B-24 that went down on the mission named "Firebird", aircraft number 42-110167 was reported to have crashed so close together with "Problem Child" and you great uncles plane that the German military had difficulty telling which aircraft was which. The location was listed near Brandebeck, Germany. Hope this info helps somewhat.

Thank you. I will try it. As for being prepared for what I may find in the file...thank you for the warning. I will try and remember it is just a piece of my great uncle's story.

Thank you again

Kim

You're quite welcome. It's always a pleasure to help a veterans family find a little piece of history so they can be remembered for their sacrifice. If you need anything else feel free to ask, I'll see what I can find for you. And apparently the pilot, Lt. Cloughley, of your Grand-Uncles plane survived the loss of the aircraft and was a POW in Germany.
