ANNOUNCING A MEMORIAL March 9 2014
HONORING ALL THE KNOWN WORLD WAR II, U.S. SUBMARINE MEN LOST

A new Encyclopedia in six volumes This work has been ongoing since the year 2004.
The U.S. Submarine Men's organizations use the words "Perpetuate the Memories" in their mottoes.
Monuments and Memorials have been erected in every State listing the boats lost with a brief listing of the names.
However until recently, little has been known about each man.
Extensive and costly research has been done to gather details, such as a basic genealogy with a history, including many WWII era photos of these men.
The work has been documented and published as:

My uncle, Russell Oras Sink, died on the USS Scorpion in the South China Sea (I think or that is what my Dad Joseph E Sink told me). I do have some pictures of him as a child and in his Navy uniform. I will look up your book to see what you have on him. I just found that there is a memorial at Pearl Harbor so I will need to make another trip there to see this. Thanks.

My father Raymond Jefferson Holland, served aboard the USS Swordfish lost in January of 1945. There were about 60 men on the Swordfish. I have photos of my father and one of the crew. I have many letters from my father. Does anyone know where the memorials are in California or Arkansas? Many thanks to Mr. Wittmer and Mr. Hinman and all who worked on the memorials.

The submarines were commemorated in different States, one submarine per State, except for California which had two.

All of the States in which there are memorials for various WW2 submarines, and the name of the submarine in each State are listed on this link.

He is listed on the muster rolls of the U.S.S. Swordfish and in his commemorative records as

Ray Holland 3467957 Motor Machinist's Mate Second Class, ( his final rank ), U.S. Navy

He enlisted 10th April 1940 in Little Rock Arkansas, so he was a prewar volunteer.

He joined the U.S.S.Swordfish on 10th April 1943.

There is a years difference in his official date of death in 1946 and the approximate date of the sinking of the U.S.S Swordfish in 1945, that's because when someone was listed as being missing in action, if no report was received about them after a year, they would be presumed to be deceased and their official date of death would be deemed to be one year after the last date on which they had been known to be alive.

Presumably his posthumous Purple Heart and his campaign medals were issued to your mom. ?

I believe that his name has been listed as Ray Holland on various records because that is how he was, for some reason, listed on the muster lists of the U.S.S. Swordfish, but he should have been listed by his full name.

If you want to, it's possible to have those commemorative records amended to show his full name.

It's also possible to get a copy of his service record, if you haven't already got one.

If you left mouse click on the images below, they will open and enlarge, if you then right mouse click on the image, you can download and save them as jpg format images, you can then view them offline more easily with whatever offline image viewing program that you use on your computer.

To roark619 In reply to a separate query elsewhere about next of kin applying for relative's U.S. service medals, and in particular, WW2 campaign medals.

The locations and application procedures for applying for American military service records and medals are pretty spread out and circuitous, and I believe, unnecessarily nebulous and overly complex, but hopefully these links will cut to the chase and point you in the right direction.

Records of that era are now termed as being archival, and if you see reference made to a fire in the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis in 1973 which destroyed many Army and Air Force service records, don't worry about it, only a handful of Navy records were affected.

I reckon that your father should be entitled to at least these four campaign medals...

In addition, there is also an unofficial, i.e. non governmental, International Submarine Service commemorative medal which can be purchased by submariners or their next of kin or their descendants.
