I was curious one night and stumbled upon to this thread. Anyhow, I have an idea. You've probably done it already, but...
Have you tried doing a military records search on last names only? Pick like the ten most common Basque-origin surnames that are not Spanish (i.e. There maybe a lot of Garcias in Basque, but I don't think Garcia is a Basque name so you could exclude it.) That would give you a starting list of names.
Google can be useful too. A good old-fashioned newspaper archive search for the names you turn up (especially from a small town newspaper) plus a bit of logic and deduction can turn a little theory into a lot of data. That's how I found which ship my uncle was on when it went down. (He was part of a troop detachment, so he wasn't on the muster rolls).
You could start with newspapers from towns with a large population of Basque immigrants. There's this website where you enter a surname and it tells you the areas it is most common in. worldnames.publicprofiler.org
Good luck.

Hi,
I haven't found much about the Lachiondo surname (Spanish spell): It can be spelled in many different ways such as Latxiondo, Sasionso, or Sosiondo. All of those are spelled according to the Basque language. It means in English bramble or bramble patch...
I hope this information will help you.
Here you have some webs for further information: http://www.buber.net/Basque/Diaspora/
http://www.euskalabizenak.com

We settled in Boise Idaho. When my father first came to the U.S. he went to Riverton, Wyoming where he met his Dad and brothers who were herding sheep. My Uncle Lucio is buried inthe Riverton Cemetery. Bubuers' Basque Page has a lot of information on surnames including Lachiondo.
My father, Julian Lachiondo, fought in the South Pacific as part of the 41st Infantry division. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1931 at the age of 16 and was drafted in 1941 before Pearl Harbor. He was not a U.S. citizen but received his citizenship papers while in combat in New Guinea. He was part of the Hollandia invasion of New Guinea and later fought on the island of Biak. He contracted malaria and was sent home in 1944. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in WWII. He attended divisions reunions until his death in 1991.
