I did a lot of research on this one in ref. to the last column and it was staring right at me.

In reference to the last column. The form itself that is the "Soldiers Effects" has changed a lot over the years as to the content. It use to have the following.

1. Occupation before entering the military.
2. Place of birth, Date Of Enlistment, Trade on enlistment

The last column has had many explanations in them; but they have used it for an explanation as to just what the money was being used for. In one case that I came across was a Widow who had withdrawn some money. I think it was two pounds 10s. ( you have to realize what a Pound (Money wise) was worth then verses today and it was accounted for in some cases.) In that last section was written "Widow".

The next amount authorized and given to a "widow" was for a certain amount and in that last column was written children and in one case the children's names were
written out.

There is a difference and in some cases you will find the following:

1. In the column "To whom authorized"- You will find- Widow.
In the last column you will find the name of some children.

2. In the column "To whom Authorized"- You will find the word child and a name
after it.I think this is allowed when the Child is or becomes of a certain age.
You will not find an explanation in the last column unless they are stating a
pacific purpose for the money.

3. There was certain ones that had to do with some sort of maintenance and I am
just guessing on this one and it could be maintenance to the house or whatever;
but the explanation is in the last column.

4. I also saw an explanation where there was a name in the authorization and then
in the last column "settlement of debts".

I think there had to be an accounting of how the money was being spent in
certain cases and I am sure it is according to who it was and according to their
age and accountability as to who they were (Money for children who were under
age; etc.

There was a ":War Gratuity" Paid separately other than what was in the
account. The last column from my observation was used to keep a record of
The last "Record Number" found in the first column of the calculation.

When you see the letters "Pd" or "paid. It is generally a weird looking "Pd".
It is implying that the War Gratuity has been paid and the amount you will notice
is generally in red in the "amount authorized" and also next to the "War Gratuity
Stamp or Seal". It also has the authorization number and the date stamped on
the document in red.

Most of the information in the lower left hand corner as you look at the form . It is
relating to the "War gratuity that has been paid ". The amount paid is generally in
"red" and right next to the stamp and is carried forth to the "Amount Authorized"
when it is paid out to who ever is receiving it. It is generally the "widow" as a rule
and the father or another relative and in some cases the child.

(**) 1. I found most of my information by going through several older and various books on the soldiers effects. There was some from various places in the UK.

2. You can go on the internet and type in:

A. WWI UK, Army Registers' of Soldiers' Effects.
B. WWI UK, Army Registers' of Soldiers Effects, 1901-1929.

The last column has a lot of information in ref to the various different Record
numbers and the transactions that have been made on that Record Number
that is found in the first column.

Just cross reference your three copies and look at the ref. to your "Order
Numbers" and the transactions that were made on them and the way they
make ref. to one another on the form. The info. is generally found in the last
column and bottom left hand corner. You should check out some of the older
records on this one too.

Also check out those two E-Mail addresses I gave you.

I hope this has helped you and not confused. I will be glad to explain it if you
need any further explanation.

God Bless and God Speed,
Danny
