Camp Wadsworth, South Carolina World War I

Surnames: Hair from Barnwell County, South Carolina
During WW I my grandfather was inducted into military service on August 26, 1918 and trained at Camp Wadsworth, SC. He was from Barnwell County, SC.

I am having a hard time figuring out which Corps, Regiment and/or Division he was in. I've tried narrowing it down by the date he was inducted. How long did soldiers train in a camp before being sent overseas?

He did serve in France and was wounded by a blast and also by mustard gas. I am trying to find out where in France he served since I don't know whom he served under.

Any help or suggestions to how to search further on this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Suzanne

This website has the troops at Camp Wadsworth were from New York of the 27th Division (old 6th).

The men from SC were either at Camp Jackso with the 81st Division or at Camp Sevier with the 30th Division (old 9th)

According to schistory.net the units were the 6th, 27th, 96th, plus Non Divisional and Base troops.

Does he have a military headstone with any unit information? Ancestry has applications for headstones with service information on card if not on stone.

Look for books at www.archive.org

Thank you very much for your suggestions and links. You've helped me narrow it down to a couple of Divisions. I'll keep plugging away at it.

Thanks again!
