Sevenoaks War Memorial, Kent, England

Hello

I wonder if fellow researchers will be able to help me on a project I am working on to identify all the men named on the Sevenoaks War Memorial in Kent?

I'd be very grateful for any help if anyone knows that they have a connection as we are hoping to produce a book detailing the lives of all those listed on the Sevenoaks War Memorial, including any family stories, memories and photos in time for the hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of hostilities next year. We hope this will be a fitting way to commemorate those who gave their lives.

I have created a public family tree on ancestry called Sevenoaks War Memorial, which will eventually list all of the names.

Also very interested to hear of anyone with female ancestors who were nurses etc during the war.

Hope to hear from you.

Best wishes,

Matt

Hello Brian

I have finished all WW1 - but won't be starting WW2 until next year at the earliest. I think his father served in WW1(service record is on this site) and they were from Kirkham.

I did go to Dunkirk last year as part of the tour to get photo's of all the graves/names on panels of all Wesham's lads, so if you haven't got it I can send you a photo of his name on the Dunkirk memorial. Send me your e-mail if you want it.

Regards J

First THANK YOU SO MUCH for this info-((can find notheing on ancestery-could you please resend me the marriage license to my email pattikoala@comcast.net--I cannot read this one.
I find it odd if they married in 1910--the only time I see her in a directory is 1918--and Frank would not have even been living there since he was in 1917 Camp Lewis and on to France in 1918
Ida seem to put her name as widow of Hugh so he does show up in various directories. Hugh actually died in 1897 hotel fire in Kansas when Frank was about 5 month old--an odd fact Frank was 31 when he was KIA--His father Hugh died at 31 and his grandfather died in the Civil War at age 31.
I have sent off many notes to various government offices to find any info--waiting to hear

As Ida is a widow after 1910, he should be in the CADI during this period if he died in California.

Ida Brimer died October 2, 1935 in Los Angeles County (70), State File #56110 Spouse is noted as H.L. in the index.

6216 San Pedro is the address for Frank's Mother at the time of his death in WWI.
Frank's mother, Ida is still living at the same address in Los Angeles as of the 1930 census. She has a couple (Roomers) living with her. She own's her home.

1910 census Ida and son Charles and his wife Alice and Frank are living at 301 Pavillion, Los Angeles. Charles owns his home.
Charles A Brimer Age 24 - son
Alice Brimer Age 23 - wife of Charles
Ida M Brimer Age 47 - Mother of Charles
Frank Brimer Age 22 -son of Ida

I searched several burial databases in Los Angeles County but still cannot find where Frank is buried.
I have to say, I find it very odd that there is no burial listing for Frank... There is an article in the Los Angeles Times, Jan 6, 1919, General Pershing Praises Frank for his heroism. I'm perplexed by this one.

Have you considered ordering a copy of Frank's service records from NARA? He was awarded the Silver Cross for Bravery. You can request his records and medal.

I am doing research on the Melville as it pertains to an old clock that I have.
It appears that my great, great uncle served aboard the Melville in World War One as well. I have inherited a clock passed through the years that is very unique and I'm trying to gather as much information about it as I can. It's really fascinating to me and if you have digital reproductions of your photos, I'd LOVE to see them, it would truly be amazing. Any information or help you could provide would be truly appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance.

Terry

There doesn't seem to be any mention of his interment anywhere, nor is there any mention of him on an official U.S. Goverment War Memorial.

He isn't listed on the American Battle Monuments Commisssion site.

Nor is he listed on the Department of Veterans Affairs site.

It suggests to me that if his remains were repatriated to the United States they were probably re-interred at a cemetery near to his wife's place of residence, or else at a pre existing family plot.

I suggest that you contact the Department of Veterans Affairs.

http://www.abmc.gov/home.php

http://www.abmc.gov/search/wwi.php

http://www.va.gov/

http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/

My great uncle died on the Tampa, but he was not from New Hampshire. The Coast Guard may now release
a list of crew members and their home states. Records will list the next of kin, this could help in tracking down people today. I wish you luck in getting answers to your questions.

I live in a home in New Hampshire that I believe was owned by a deceased Tampa crew member's parents (and therefore could be his childhood home). I unearthed an item in the backyard with his name and have confirmed that he's the son of previous owners. I am hoping to contact surviving family and know they're around as I've seen newspaper stories in connection with a Purple Heart ceremony.

Hi. I was interested to see that you mentioned Rosemary Dawson's inscription on the War memorial. I knew her parents well, as they lived with my Grandmother. I always wondered how she died in WW2 and I was given an answer I wasn't sure was accurate, so maybe you can help on this? As a child I loved walking on Grange Hill, but found the Memorial rather spooky, I think it was the statues. I would love a reply if you have time. Deborah Elliott

For reasons unknown to me he used anothers name to join (I assume he didn't have a birth record being born in the USA) the Navy. George A. If he is linked I need to find out why he ended up in the Australian Light horse?????

I am trying to find information on a great-grandmother, Norma Schmitz. She was born in Germany and married a G.I. (WWI), John William Conner. It looks like they had one child in Germany, and she got a job as a cook aboard a ship (do not know the name) to immigrate to the U.S.A. while pregnant. She died in child birth aboard the ship (1917), and was buried at sea.
How do I find information on her, I have no date of birth, I don't know what ship she would be on. The information I have is just word of mouth passed down, so I'm hoping it is accurate.
Please help!

USS Melville

I have a photo album of my fathers from WWI aboard the USS Melville.
The album has pictures of everywhere the ship traveled while he was stationed on board. There are several pictures of the crew, other ships, prisoners of war, and mascots. The pictures have few names on them, they are mostly group pictures.
There was a boiler explosion on the ship and many lives were taken.
I have a copy of the ships history (pictures in the album follow this history) and a copy of the ships 1920 census.
The census lists names -position on ship and the state they came from.
Would share info and would like to see that maybe a naval museum might be interested but don't know who to contact.
Betty

I think you are misinterpreting this info. It is the list of those either missing in action or buried at sea. Being in the army means he was more likely to be missing in action and his body not recovered. Don
