I came across a gravestone for one of the crewmembers lost when the USS Tampa was sunk. The name on the stone was Charles W Parkin age 17. It indicates lost at sea on Sept. 26 1918. The gravestone is in the Pocassett Cemetary in Providence RI. It is near the front entrance , to the right, about 4 rows in. There are flags marking it as a veteran's memorial. My searches indicate Parkins lived in the village of Greystone RI in 1910. His name is listed among the crewmembers lost in the NY Times article Oct 4, 1918

Thanks for sending the information. I had read that a few bodies of the crew were found and sent back to the United States for burial. This may be the grave of one of those men.
Thanks,
John

I came across the headstone of one of the servicemen who was lost at Grace Episcopal Churchyard in Jamaica, Queens, NY. He is buried with his family.
Inscription reads:
James Marconnier Fleury son of John B. & Rosa M. Fleury
Born March 7, 1888
Died in the service of his country Sept 26, 1918 when the U.S.S. Tampa was torpedoed

Thank you for the additional information. I had read in an account that one or two bodies did wash up and could be identified. The name Fluery is familiar. Thank you for providing additional information.

I'm a relative of one of the young men who died on the USS Tampa--Irving Alexander Slicklen. You can probably get a lot of information from the Coast Guard Museum, located in New London, CT.

Did you have a relative on the ship? If so, do you have any photos you could share?

Yes, my great uncle, John Miller, was assigned to the Tampa. Years ago I went to the Coast Guard Museum in New London, CT and got information.
I remember as a child pictures my grandparents had of him in his uniform. the time flies by, where the photos may be now I am not sure. About a year ago, my aunt gave me some old family albums. I will have to go back to see if they contain the photos I remember.
I will contact you if I find anything. Thank you for responding.
