Grange Hill War Memorial, West Kirby, Wirral
Please let me know if any of your ancestors are recorded on the War Memorial on Grange Hill, West Kirby. I am researching the biographies of all 334 men and women who died during the Great War of 1914-1918. I have lots of information to share with you and would also like to receive any more which you might have.

My uncles Reginald and Sydney HEAL (the latter my namesake)are on the list of the fallen on this memorial. I have details of their final end, Reg at the Somme (1916) and Syd at Monastir Doiren (1918) on the Salonika front, both at age 22.
I can also tell you something of the passing of Rosemary Dawson in the WWII list
All are in my new book "The House that Percy Built" to be release in the U.K. through Countyvise, Birkenhead in 2012. It will also be published in Canada by Cordillera Books, Vancouver

Hi. I was interested to see that you mentioned Rosemary Dawson's inscription on the War memorial. I knew her parents well, as they lived with my Grandmother. I always wondered how she died in WW2 and I was given an answer I wasn't sure was accurate, so maybe you can help on this? As a child I loved walking on Grange Hill, but found the Memorial rather spooky, I think it was the statues. I would love a reply if you have time. Deborah Elliott

Hello - I am not sure if my husband's Great Uncle, John Westwood, who was born in West Kirby and died in WW1 is commemorated on the War Memorial - I would be grateful if you could let us know and we can send some photos, memories, etc? Many thanks John and Jo Hooke

Re: Grange Hill War Memorial, West Kirby, Wirral
Very many thanks for your detailed and helpful information - this is really useful. Apologies, I made an error with West and South Kirkby. I do have a copy of John's will and details of his commonwealth grave - this is incorrectly inscribed as 'G' instead of 'J' and I contacted them to see if we, as a family could request this change - offering to pay if necessary. Five years later I received a response (! I understand fully this site is run by volunteers) - however, last year, I met a gentleman representing the CWGC at a local event and he kindly offered to organise this. He requested John's birth certificate - but we are unable to locate this. His surviving niece is sure he was born in Pontefract - but nothing there. I have ordered about 6 certificates - none of whom is him. Unfortunately I have mislaid the CWGC representative's email address, - he requested merely John's date of birth - which we do believe to be accurate - like so many records, his military record was destroyed, so impossible to verify. You have spent so much time researching him, our family would like to convey our grateful appreciation for your time and trouble. Jo Hooke
