My grandfather's brother, John Doyle, served in Company F of the 303rd Ammunition Train which was part of the 78th Division. Their service record in the AEF theater of operations includes action at St.Mihiel, Sept.12-16th 1918, Meuse-Argonne, Oct.10-Nov.9 1918, Saizerais, Aug.28-Sept.11 1918 and Puvenelle, Sept.17-Oct.4 1918.The inscriptions on their battle streamers are [St.Mihiel], [Meuse Argonne] and [Lorraine]. There is a chance that the 302nd was also part of the 78th. I believe the 78th was a New Jersey outfit.

I assume that the ammunition train transported the ammunition that was used by the front line troops. there would have had to be enough men to load and unload the ammunition from the train as well as men available to guard this very valuable commodity. my uncle john doyle got close enough to the action to have been wounded in a poison gas attack. he recovered but it led to his early death at age 34 in 1929

I believe that the ammunition train was attached to the infantry just as the signal corp and medical corps were.

Hi,

My great-grandfather, Irvin Ellis Hunter served in WW1 Company K 302nd Regiment Infantry
and 2nd Pioneer Infantry, U.S. Army
My great-grandfather's usual job was an engineer. Would these two divisions have anything to do with that type of occupation?
I can't seem to find any information on what these two divisions actually did. Can anyone tell me?

Respectfully,

Candace M. Corthell

The 302nd Ammunition Train was assigned to the 77th "Statue of Liberty" Division which was made up of New Yorkers. They trained at Camp Upton on Long Island. All Infantry Divisions in WW1 had an ammo train, supply train, sanitary train and an engineer train and Military Police train. There was a Colonel assigned as Commander of Trains and the sub trains were commanded by Lt Colonels. The Ammo train usually consisted of 8 companies, 4 motorized with trucks and the other 4 with mules, horses and wagons. The supply train was usually all motorized. The Sanitary train had 4 Field Hospitals and 4 Ambulance Companies. The trains were basically the logistics and supply units of the division. All the trains in the 77th Division were numbered 302nd. 302nd Ammo, 302nd Supply 302nd Sanitary etc. in the 78th Div. it was the 303rd Ammo etc. my aunt and uncle had a boarder Tom Hickey, who was the First Sgt in one of the companies of the 302nd Ammo train. I have his helmet, and Infantry Drill Manual. He is buried in Pinelawn National Cemetery.

My g grandfather Joseph was in the 302nd Company A part of the 77th Division in WWI.

I found this book that you can read online that lists wounded and gives a description of life during the war.
