I have an ancestor named Chauncey Thomas, b. 1785 in CT (or NH). He married and had several children in NY before moving to Michigan, where he most likely died, between 1850 and 1860. The only census he is definitely found in is 1850 Reading, Hillsdale, MI.

He may have served in the War of 1812.

Land Patents in Illinois show Chauncey Thomas "late a Colonel in Churchill's Artillery" receiving land in Knox County, IL, 1817.

I have not been able to find additional information about this Chauncey Thomas of "Churchill's Artillery" to determine if they are the same person.

Any help in finding more information on the soldier Chauncey Thomas, would be much appreciated!

C.S.

Accession Nr:	IL5040__.232
Document Type:	State Volume Patent
State:	Illinois
Issue Date:	11/29/1817
Cancelled:	No

Land Description:
State: IL
Meridian: 4th PM - 1815 Illinois
Twp: 010N
Range: 003E
Aliquots: SE 1/4
Section:8
County: Knox

I James Monroe Esq[?]
President of the United States of America,
TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME, GREETINGS:
Know ye, That in pursuance of the Acts of Congress appropriating
and granting Land to the late Army of the United States, passed on and since
the sixth day of May, 1812, Chancey Thomas
having deposited in the General Land-Office a Warrant in his favor,
numbered 12466 [or 06] there is granted unto the said Chancey
Thomas -- late a Corporal in Churchills
Company of Artillery --- a certain Tract of Land,
containing one hundred & sixty acres being the Southeast ar
of Section Eight of Township Ten North in
Range Three East, in the Tract appropriated (by the Act afore-
said) for Military Bounties, in the Territory of Illinois
TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the said Quarter Section of Land,
with the appurtenances thereof, unto the said Chauncey Thomas
and to his
heirs and assigns forever.
IN TESTIMONEY WHEREOF, I have caused these Letters
to be made patent, and the Seal of the General Land-Office
to be hereunto affixed, Given under my Hand, at the
City of Washington, this twenty ninth day
November in the Year of our
Lord one thousand eight hundred and Seventeen
and of the Independence of the United States of America
the forty-Second
By the President, Jeff (or Jell?)
Commissioner of the General Land-Office.

[handwritten at left bottom: (L. These name identities point out that Asa Sherman is the grandson of Benoni Sherman and Margaret Havens of North Kingstown, Washington Co., Rhode Island. Benoni and Margaret had a kid named Lois Sherman who married David Bates. Here is what is known about Lowry Sherman: He married Hannah Matteson on September 7, 1761 in Coventry, Kent Co., RI and had a son named Nathan, who was born on December 18, 1762 in Coventry, Kent Co., Rhode Island. Captain Nathaniel Sherman’s son Benoni Sherman was honorably discharged from the service (during the War of 1812) at a camp near Brownsville, Kings Co., New York. Alpheus Sherman, son of Benoni was born on January 12, 1807 in Camillus, Onondaga Co., NY. Lois Sherman (Maitland) was born about 1804 in Oneida County, New York. She and her husband had a son named William Henry Maitland who was born in Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York on December 18, 1823.

Grandparents: Nathaniel Havens Sherman (d. 1826 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., Rhode Island) and Elizabeth Eldred (d. 3-24-1829 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., RI) Married: October 10, 1773 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., Rhode Island
Children: Asa (c.1774), Benoni (c.1775 to 1848 in Jefferson Co., IN), Nathaniel (c.1783 in RI to 5-17-1858 in Milton, Jefferson Co., IN), Elisha (c.1790)

Here is what is known about Captain Nathaniel Sherman and his descendants:
---He was a soldier in the Revolution. A "Havens' Sherman enlisted at Exeter, R. I. for three months Sept. 18, 1776 (R.I.V.R. p. 252) Captain Nathaniel Havens Sherman was in command of the 4th Company, North Kingston Regt., Rhode Island Militia in 1781 and 1783. (Civil & Military Records, Rhode Island Vol. 1 1647-1800 p. 404 for 1781 service and p. 422 for 1783.)
His will was badly damaged by fire. I have searched for years for information on this family and am still searching. It is possible that he is the one in Ballstown, Albany Co., New York in the Census of 1790. If so, at that time he had: 2 males over 16; 5 males under 16; 7 females over 16. F.D.S. 1685; R.I.V.R.: R.V.S.
---"The Ancestors and Descendants of Philip Shearman, the first secretary and recorder of the colony of Rhode Island" by Frank Dempster Sherman, 1908. She sent copies of several pages. It refers to his will, proved May 9, 1826, Wickford, RI. It is badly damaged by fire but talks of his wife Elizabeth; nephew Nathaniel, son of sister, Sarah, wife of Silas Sherman; John R Sherman; and the widow of the late Elijah Sherman. He is titled Captain in many references. ---He married Elizabeth Eldred on October 10, 1773 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., RI and had three known sons: Nathaniel, Elisha, and Benoni. Benoni Sherman was killed in 1848 in Jefferson Co., Indiana by a falling tree. Nathaniel Sherman died May 17, 1858 in Jefferson Co., Indiana. --Benoni Sherman who is the son of Captain Nathaniel Sherman, served in the War of 1812 in the 13th Brigade, New York detached militia from Sept. 14 to Nov. 1813. She references a newspaper article, evidently published in 1902, but with the year 1876 written in pencil, that says: "A Canaanite who has been with us for many years. Benjamin Sherman's interesting recollections.

Benjamin Sherman, who now resides at Canaan, Indiana, was born in Onondaga County, NY, November 4, 1815. He came with his father, Nathaniel Sherman, together with Benona Sherman, Elisha Sherman, Elder Leavitt and a Mr. Minor, to Indiana in the year, 1816. They came across the Allegheny Mountains in wagons to the headwaters of the Allegheny River, came down that river and Ohio River on flatboats and a party landed at the mouth of Eagle Hollow, Christmas Eve, 1816, with the exception of one of the party, who remained in Ohio for a while. Mr. Sherman's recollections of early times are vivid, and while not seeking notoriety, he talks freely of events in his early life. His early days were times of incessant and hard labor in Milton Twp. his father having built a hewed log house on the farm now occupied by Mr. John Sehrt.
Mr. Sherman was a good stone mason and hauled the stone to build the fence around the front of the Lawson farm. Much of this stone was gotten out of the creek bottom in water, waist deep. Mr Sherman would often break the ice in the creek and wade around all day hauling stone for weeks at a time, late in the fall and early winter. He says he has stood in the Ohio River at Madison from morning till night for three weeks at a time unloading rafts of lumber and putting it ashore, part of this time being between Christmas and New Years. In answer to the question whether this had injured his health, he said it had not. He said the best brand of whiskey could then be purchased for 25 cents a gallon.
Mr Sherman is now in his 88th year, is hale and hearty, goes to church every night, when meeting is in progress, reads the Courier without the aid of glasses, and is Jolly and full of fun. He has in his possession a flintrock rifle that his father carried in the war of 1812. He remembers when Governor Hendricks and his daughters rode horseback from Madison to Washington. Mr. Sherman has won fame as a weather prophet and it is declared by some that they will take his predictions for the next 24 hours, in preference to the official forecast from Washington for the same time."

Great grandparents: Benoni Sherman (7-7-1719 in N. Kingstown, RI to 2-24-1768 in N. Kingstown, RI) and Margaret Havens (d. 1775)
Married: December 24, 1741 in North Kingstown, Washington Co., Rhode Island
Children: Lowry (Abt.1742), Avis (m. With Perry's victory, the defeat of the Indians and British at the Battle on the Thames River and the retaking of Detroit, portions of the 17th and 19th were moved to Buffalo and Sackett's Harbor.
Trying to find any info on the units my GGGG-Grandfather, Maynard Kidder (1785-1856) served in. The Pension application form states he fought in the NY militia under Capt. Thomas Winslow and also under Capt. Wilcox. Haven't been able to find much of anything. He was living in Moriah, NY at the time. Supposedly fought in the Battle of Plattsburgh/Champlain. Any help would be much appreciated!
Cheers, Matt

Pat,
There is a William MOORS with a military pension listed in the "State of Vermont Roster of Soldiers in the War of 1812-14," pub. 1933, but the war ended Dec. 24, 1814, not in 1815. Therefore, I do not know if he was your ancestor. Capt. Cyrus JOHNSON was from Berlin, VT.

He was not my ancestor. Please see details in subject box above.

I am a former American citizen (honourably discharged) who left the USA in 1968 and married "Down Under". I live in Australia presently but I am a New Zealander now. Got married here 40 years ago and stayed. I, strangely enough, am an historian and did my MA thesis on the New Zealand Maori and Land Alienation. I only became focused on my family history when I found out that my grandmother on my mother's side hid the fact that her father was German through and through - 100%. Her middle name was Ebba- which I always thought was pronounced "EH-BA" but a German friend raised in Bavaria informed me it was "EEE-BA" sort of like "EVA" with a "B". Her family name was Her father's name was Charles Severin Kress. I have learned to think laterally as an historian and I search just for SEVERIN KRESS thinking Charles' father gave him his OWN name as a middle name and BINGO- I found my Great Great Grandfather had himself come from Bavaria and was a Private in the New York 9th Hawkins Zouaves and wounded at Camden and Antietam. My own family name was Venditti (Italian) and, I believe Grandma (who also married an Italian - Criazzo- was disowned by the Kress family because- I BELIEVE they were Jewish. It is only a hunch but I never met or even HEARD any talk at ALL about the Kress family. I think because my mother's mother -MIldred Ebba Kress-married an Italian and a catholic- that she was "exiled". I have found that Severin was still alive in 1923 but- in the 1930 census- his wife is listed as WIDOW. She also was living in a $70,000 house at the height of the depression YET nowhere can I find Severin's death notices. I served with the 2nd battalion 5th US Cavalry 1st Cavalry Division and the First Division from 1964 to 1966- scan attached. I changed my name in 1971 because foreign names in New Zealand were frowned upon. I welcome any enquiries- Vince MacDonald

Thanks for the response. I don't have a ship, I am just fishing. My 3GGrandfather William H. Mead, was born in New York City in 1798. That would make him 14 in 1812. Family stories say he was a sailor, and he lived not far from the wharves in lower manhattan during the time. I figure a young man of that time who was interested in sea life, might have joined up with the privateers to make his fortune or lose his life. He didn't lose his life, by 1820 he is in So. Carolina, marries a local, has 3 sons, then goes back to sea. At his death the family received a substantial inheirtance from him. So he had to be associated with high profit ships; privateers, slave trading, blockade running, or packet ships. Would love to know if you have any record of him.
Jerry

I have a copy of a Military Land Warrant dated 1872 naming his widow, Isabella Dunn, and assigning the 160 acres in Dakota Territory to their son, Gibson Dunn.

I'm thinking about ordering records from NARA, but, I'm not really sure what records I should request.
Capt. Alexander McClure's Co., 1 Reg't (Laight's)New York State Detached Militia

Is there anywhere else other than NARA where I could obtain info on this Company? Today I received a copy of my ancestor's (Ebenezer Ruland) "Company Muster Roll" from NARA, but with only a time span (Sept 2 to Oct 25, 1814) of his dates of service. And at the bottom of this page where "Remarks and alterations since last muster:" was printed, the handwritten reply was "Never appd". Any advice will be appreciated.

Re: NY Military Equipment Claim, War 1812 Help?

arbojenn,
No I didn't get a copy of the actual claim. What I got was a copy of a document from Jackson Michigan Thomas Field's home in 1859) wherein he submitted a claim to the state of NY for expenses he incurred in 1812. It shows his cost for his musket, bayonette, uniform coat, badge and plume etc. and for the cost of transportation to and from Livingston NY, the site of a staging ground for one of the early battles of the war. It shows he volunteered the next day after the War was declaired. Contact the NY State Archives, you might be surprised what you find.

Glad to help! If he made a claim, then there should be a pension record and, as I said, it should include all of his service record, plus any supporting documents he (or a widow or child claiming) would have had to submit. I'm sorry I didn't get my GG grandfather's (I'll have to send for it now separately) simply because one of my questions is when and where he married! His wife, my GG grandmother, was, I suspect, his second wife as she was a good deal younger, and though he was from NY and she was from Vermont, I suspect they met and married in Ohio, but don't know.

Thanks! I went to the website and downloaded the form for military service record.

If the veteran never put in for a pension or assistance, would there still be a pension record on him?

I am requesting a copy of his claim form as I have no idea where he was BEFORE the war, only where he was when he made his claim. Thank you so much for your help!

Locating the record was the hard part (thanks to Ancestry.com I finally managed it) -- I then went onto the NARA web site (National Archives and Records Admin). It isn't the most straight-forward web site in the world, but follow links to military records pre-1917. You can order online then, and pay by credit card. However, I would suggest that instead you download the pdf version of the order form and use it to order NOT the military record but the pension record (this seems impossible to do online). The pension record includes the full military record plus, if the veteran or his widow or children ever applied for a pension or assistance, it can include such things as proof of marriage, etc., which can be invaluable for genealogy. What I got was a copy of the page on which my ancestor was registered, which gave me his age, where born, where recruited from, occupation, and so on, as well as the notes of his service (which is the part I need help with). It also gave a brief physical description, so I know how tall he was and that he had brown hair and gray eyes.

Hope that's helpful!
