Hi Fran,
What is the name of your ancestor who served in this regiment?
Good luck researching ancestors,
Jan

His name is, David Merritt. According to his military record for some reason he was mustered in and out in the span of about six months.

I'm hopeing that info on the regiment may explain this short time period.

Take care
Fran

Hi Fran,
Service of six months is longer than most regular Army soldiers I have transcribed with the shortest being about a week who were at the Battle of Plattsburg, NY. The longest time served has been five years while other Infantry groups were for 1 year or 2 1/2 years. A naval battle ended the war.
Sorry, David Merritt is not listed in my War of 1812-14 book I have here.

Jan:

Do you know anything about Warner's Regiment? I would really like to know as much as I can. But I can't seem to find out anything. Why the short stay? Do you know?

Thank you for your time and trouble

Hi Fran,
Sorry I do not have that information in the book I have here. For a lookup contact Teri Tighe, titighe@aol.com, who has a CD of NY soldiers in the War of 1812; I read her post on this message board.
Good luck researching ancestors,
Jan

Fran- I, too, have reviewed the Detached Cavalry (Warner's) records at NARA many, many years ago. They existed. The group enlisted in Capt Wm H Acker (or Ecker) 's co of Col John B Warner's Regiment at Plattekill (then called Pleasant Valley) Ulster Co, NY, in late Sept 1814. They were sent to NYC, out to Governor's Island to stand guard, then mustered out in late Oct or Nov 1814 at Fort Greene which stood where the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge is today. (There is a small park there today.) Twenty years ago I found a partial list of the company on Prodigy but would be unable to find it now. A few of the names: Lancaster Odell Underhill, Isaac Odell, Andrew or Richard Garrison, Isaac Underhill. James B Warner was chosen to gather the regiment and was sent out from NYC. William H Acker was from Orange or Ulster Co. It was a very elite unit. In the beat records (??) at NARA they requested private waiters, silver service, plumes and fancy uniforms (red coats with buff lapels). The brass balked at private waiters so Warner was to pick that up himself. My ggg grandfather Isaac B Van Valkenburgh requested reimbursement for loss of his horse and the fancy equipment from the State of NY but was reimbursed about $57 only. He was able to parlay that brief service into several bounty land warrants out West. That's about all I know. Hope it helps.

I believe I gave the wrong name above for the Colonel of Warner's Detached Cavalry Regiment. He should be James B Warner. There are records online that describe the formation of his regiment of cavalry.

Sorry for the confusion.
