War of 1812 Pension Records

I recently came across the application for a 1812 pension record for one of my ancestors. On the line marked spouse, it listed the 1st wife as being sold. What would this mean. The relative lived in New York City and served for 4 months in 1813.

If he was married to a free woman then yes he could sell her.
However if he was not married to her then that would fell under slavery and that's all to toghter something different.

Go to my web site Civil War Days & Those Surnames, I did a page on selling ones wife, here is the link.
